I stumbled across a breeder website for gun dog breeders and now I can't decide between a field spaniel, sussex or field bred American Cocker for my next dog. Anybody have any experiences with fields or sussex? I'm leaning toward the field spaniel because I like the size and I like that they're generally only found through good breeders instead of being overbred by byb idiots but the sussex is such a clown and then there are loveable cockers. Pics below for comparisons. It'll be a long time hopefully until I consider another dog but in the meantime, I'm dreaming of a well bred spaniel.

Haaa! Oooooh, pretty and silky looking!! MP was supposedly a wee bit "English Springer Spaniel: UK Field" (whatever) according to Wisdom Panel, so I get a wee bit wiggly when I hear spaniel anything now. I don't know my breeds but they all look dang cute!!

Do you have to decide beforehand? Maybe look into breeders for all 3 of them and then decide from which breeder you'd most likely get the dog you really want?

Are you sure you don't want a French Brittany Spaniel? We meet one at the nature preserve and she is the COOLEST dog.

A friend of mine lost her Springer a few months ago and is posting field spaniel puppy pics all over IG, so I'm currently smitten with them. My very first birthday present was a cocker, so I'll always have a soft spot for them, but I've seen so many messed up cockers that I'm a bit gun shy. Not sure why, but I'm not a sussex fan. Have fun dreaming !

Oh, the French Brittany is pretty! I don't have to make any firm decisions anytime soon hopefully but I am looking around. If Max has taught me anything it's that you can't control everything but prevention is worth its weight which is why I'm looking at good gundog breeders. Maybe I'll just get one of each eventually?

That's a stock photo from a google search, but the French Brit we know looks quite like that. She's the NICEST dog, and by that I mean she's not cowed or annoyed by Rowley and Alex and their pushy behavior; she thinks they're doofus dogs, which they are.

Her owner does some hunting with her, when he can, he said. She loves being out in the nature preserve and he has a sleigh-bell on her collar so he can keep track of her, she explores off the trail. Seems to enjoy the exercise but isn't hyper about it. I'm curious about the breed because the American Brittany has its share of health and temperament problems now, and I think the French version may have avoided most of that by being uncommon. (As the owner of a Finnish Lapphund, I know the benefits conferred by being uncommon as a breed.)

One of each, I like that! Just 'stage' them two years apart and it's all good!

Good gundog breeders are sooooo hard to find. So I tend to agree with Sabine. If you aren’t set on a particular one, choose by breeder. Though I agree, the Field Spaniel is dreamy.

We drove to Purina farms today and caught the end of the field spaniel national specialty. Swoon! Also my field spaniel is going to need a Welsh Springer friend!

There seem to be several good breeders in your general driving distance. I may have to have a meet up someday!
