Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Postby SherriA » Wed May 16, 2018 1:01 pm

Henry has an appointment with the evaluator at our training center for his DMWYD Novice Trick Dog test on Sunday. Wish us luck!

I'm rather tickled at the idea of my 12 yr old retired research beagle being a certified trick dog LOL

Our evaluator was sick on Sunday, so we're rescheduled for next week. I guess that gives us another week to practice!

After several delays because of schedules and weather issues, we finally got to do our test today. Henry passed his Advanced Trick Dog title! I'm so proud of my little guy! I didn't think we'd get that far but my trainer has more faith in his skills than I do and just kept calling out behaviours she knew he could do. Henry really stepped up and did a great job :)

Novice (needs 15, we did 18):
- ramp
- come
- down
- leave it
- 3 behaviours with only hand signals (spin, peek a boo, down)
- jomp through a hoop
- jump over a bar
- kennel up
- paws up on an object
- pedestal
- peekaboo
- shake hands
- sit
- spin
- stay
- touch my hand
- which hand has the treat?
- wobble board balance

Intermediate (needs 12, we did 14):
- go around
- hand signals only for 6 behaviours (sit, down, peekaboo, spin, shake, high five, touch, wave)
- ladder work
- logic test
- paws on my arm
- place (finish to my left side)
- push a ball
- go to your mat
- wave
- jump wraps right and left
- perch work
- sit pretty
- back up (counts as 2)
- skateboard with front paws (counts as 2)

Advanced (needs 5, we did 6):
- back up
- jump figure 8's
- skateboard
- tap a bell
- roll a balance peanut
- double hoop sequence

It's a silly thing, but I'm so proud of him that I"m going to submit his results to get his certificates/ribbons. :)

Thanks everyone!

We're taking the summer off from classes, though not completely willingly. Our favourite trainer, who has worked with us since our first day there, is moving and they're still looking for someone to replace her. She did most of the "fun" classes - agility, tricks, recall, therapy prep, etc - in addition to some of the obedience classes, so they're scrambling trying to figure out how to fill in those gaps. She also did the majority of the evening/weekend classes, which is what fits best in my schedule. We like all the trainers there, but Wendy was with us from the beginning and she gets a lot of credit for what Henry has accomplished. We're sure going to miss her!
