Yep, it's demodex!

Postby PaulaS » Sun May 08, 2005 2:40 pm

As I suspected, Jack definitely has demodex. The scraping on Friday was positive this time.

We're taking a wait and see approach, which is fine with me, since I'm trying to treat it naturally anyway. The vet said the only treatment they see any results with is ivermectin, and with the possibility of Jack being a BC mix, he will not take a chance with it (again, fine by me, I wouldn't either). So, since it's not bothering him (not itchy at all), we're going to watch it and see.

Callie emailed me her treatment, and I'm going to give that a try. For those who don't know, her recommendation is lots of vitamins and supplements, and dipping with tea tree oil. I've been loading him up with the vitamins already (thanks to Lilian's suggestion), and I gave him the first tea tree oil rinse on Thursday.

So any good thoughts you can spare him will be appreciated. I know it's a long road ahead, but I figured it couldn't hurt! Any suggestions are appreciated, too.

If it's a few spots, as opposed to generalized, then it should most likely get better with the immune boost and no further treatment. When I look back at the worst dogs I saw in the vet clinics, they were the pups eating the Iams, SD or grocery foods. I always wondered why some responded to treatment and others didn't until I started learning about food! The stress of a new home, teething, etc. like I mentioned before is the cause, but his body should be able to stop it from getting serious. Hang in there!!

I don't know if you remember Paula, but Skye had it too when I first bought her home. I used Callies system and she cleared up in about 2 weeks. I hope the same is true for you.

I just had a thought.... We're giving Zoe immune system support with Mitake Mushroom extract. I'm wondering if the immune boosting properties would help Jack, especially since Demodex effects puppies with underdeveloped immune systems.

I'd be willing to throw some of that in, too! I don't see how it could hurt. Thanks for the idea!

Can I find it at any health-food store?
