Oh the smell!!!

Postby SherriA » Wed Apr 25, 2018 3:24 pm

I've always commented that I'm so lucky to have a dog that never has gas. Well, all of that has changed in the past couple of weeks. Henry is now farting regularly and the smell will clear the room. I honestly thought I had a sewer line break at one point, because I couldn't think of what else could cause that stench.

He's eating the same food at the same time, getting the same treats, and pretty much the same amount. Nothing in his diet has changed. So I'm stumped about what could be causing it or how to deal with it. Of course, my mind keeps thinking that there's something going on with the tumors that's messing up his GI system, but that doesn't make sense - the tumors are on his liver and his liver function is normal. (I found another big lump on his chest yesterday that seems to have sprung up out of nowhere too. It feels like another lipoma, but you know I'm stressing about it...)

So, any thoughts on what I could do? I haven't been giving probiotics, so maybe add those back in? Or digestive enzymes? Any ideas? This smell is going to kill me! It's not warm enough to have the windows open 24x7 yet.

My first question always is, did something change with the products themselves? We don't always know right away when formulas change, etc.

I'd definitely give probiotics (multiple benefits on top of balancing the gut flora), and you can try something like Beano to also cut down on fermentation. it helps not just with beans. You can crush the tablet, or hand-feed it wrapped in some food before a meal.

He eats THK and I'm not aware of any changes but I'll ask them. Hadn't thought of that!

Has anything happened recently to mess with his gut flora -- a course of antibiotics, or other meds?

I second the probiotics recommendation.

Nothing that I can think of, Connie. Hopefully probiotics helps

Could he have picked up intestinal parasites? Low level hookworm infection can cause minor intestinal upset.

I second the beano or Gas-x for a short term fix. Could he be nibbling something on the sly? I have to baby sit Max outside in the spring. He thinks all the garden shoots are his personal salad bowl and it gives him gas sometimes.
