Fruit and Pee

Postby keeksuka » Tue Jul 28, 2015 11:49 am

Two of my dogs have had urine tests that came back with high ph, and my vet said that she actually sees that often with dogs who are on grain-free kibble and suggested a diet change. These two dogs are eating approximately 50% Fromm Lamb and Lentil kibble, 25% Honest Kitchen Embark, and 25% random things I add in - the usual stuff like raw eggs, yogurt, meat scraps etc.

They are also eating copious amounts of pears and cherries from the yard, and I found those two fruits in a list of foods that make urine alkaline. is it possible that eating tons of pears and cherries is changing their PH that much?

I know that I should be eliminating kibble from their diet entirely, and I will if I have to but it's hard to stretch the budget any further with 5 dogs. If it's just the pears and cherries I know things will be back to normal soon - or at least until the figs come in.

I'd be inclined to blame the pears and cherries, but don't know for sure. I've never had a high pH issue from feeding grain free. We'll see what happens when the pears start dropping from my tree, because I have a TON of fruit on it this year.

It's an interesting theory. I would wonder about the sugars from those fruits too. I don't have any good advice except to maybe start hanging out in a cranberry bog? j/k, sort of.

Oh, the sugars - I think they used to feed Max's SIBO.
