HELP! Elsie ate 30 bully sticks!!

Postby Moemer » Sat Jul 18, 2015 8:19 pm

Elsie raided a box that I didn't know was open and ate TWO PACKAGES of bully sticks!! They were the pork kinds, so not as big as the beef ones. All "pizzle sticks". It says fat is 5%, how fatty is that? I dont' think penises are very fatty, are they??
She doesn't tolerate pork well, but I'm more concerned about the potential for pancreatitis if they are too high in fat. They are fully digestable, so hopefully impaction isn't an issue. we left at 8:30 and it's 11:15 now, I don't know when she ate them.

Should she be vomiting this up?? Or is she okay?

Yikes! I'd be calling the pros for a consult before inducing vomiting. Are you _sure_ she ingested them all? Mine would have the dang things stashed everywhere like carnivorous squirrels.

I really don't know what the right thing to do is - I don't know if that many could induce blockage or anything like that, but ultimately, if that isn't a concern, a bunch of activated charcoal might be helpful and would probably be my go-to right now. I would also be keeping an eye on how her tummy is feeling - soft/pliable, puffy from an overfull meal, firm from inflammation, tender, etc.

Holy crap! Yes, I'd say some activated charcoal and lots of fiber is in order if her tummy isn't distended or firm. Maybe gas-x Jeez Elsie! I would normally make them vomit but it's been long enough that I think that moment has passed. I would be encouraging poops at every turn though.
ETA: I think the fat thing is also relative. I can eat 1 lb of turkey that's 95% lean but that's still almost an ounce of fat. I don't know what the weight on 30 pizzles is but 5% of that seems like quite a bit.

Thanks all - i tried for the vomiting in case something came up, but i think the peroxide was old and of course stores we're closed so then she had 30 bully sticks AND peroxide on her belly. Then I stuffed her full of charcoal. There's a reason i keep that stuff on hand...

She was feeling fine and was greatly insulted that she didn't get get dinner. I'm positive that she didn't stash them. Her motto is "why eat later what I can eat now?"

She seems to be fine this morning so fingers crossed things stay that way! Aaaaak!!! (She must have heard that i got insurance for rowan and she doesn't have any)

She's had surprisingly not bad poop today. Weird.

Wow - Elsie certainly knows how to get your attention doesn't she? That'll teach you to allow a puppy intruder into HER family! That said, I hope everything moves through smoothly - I've had dogs that it wouldn't have fazed, and others who couldn't handle a single pizzle.
