Vibes for Abby

Postby amyzon » Fri Jul 05, 2013 4:28 am

Abby is having surgery this morning. She has two little masses on her right abdomen, 5 mm and 8 mm (small, thankfully). The vet and I looked at a needle aspirate of one and that one looks like it's probably a mast cell tumor. It is pink and the other, smaller one is dark red-purple. From what I have read these tumors can have very varied appearances. On the bright side, her bloodwork was excellent....hopefully these are low grade lesions and excision will be curative. Please send her some good vibes this morning....I had to work so hubby is taking her in and I'm picking her up this afternoon. I'm also bringing the lesions in to process at my pathology lab this weekend and my docs are going to look at the slides with me next week. One of them has done a little vet path on the side. :) She has a third lesion on her right side but it's very small and looks more like a tiny cyst--she's prone to sebaceous cysts--I've had to open and drain 3 on her over the years. Hopefully the two on her abdomen are the only ones we have to worry about. I'm asking him to do wide excisions on both to get clean margins. I'm a wreck this morning, so I could use a few calm down vibes myself...my sweet girl....she's so loving and trusting. :bawl:

Glad everything went well!

You might want to follow the surgery up with some quercitin and tagamet, to target anything that got loose during the surgery. Many vets will give a shot of pred, to dampen the response, for a similar reason as the quercitin.

Hoping for clear margins and low mitotic figures!

I don't know what size of dog Abby is, but this page has recommendations for dosage of the tagamet. Most folks use benadryl, I jut prefer quercitin, though I have no idea of dose. For my 18 pound dog, for her allergies, I cut the tab in quarters.

Curcumin also helps for mast cell tumors, but I would hold off on more than the above until you get a look and see what you have.

Just finished looking at the slides with one of the pathologists...

Two of the three lesions were mast cell tumors. The third was a hemangioma. The mast cell tumors appear to be between low-intermediate grade, with clean margins. They are well curcumscribed, but there are focal areas of tumor infiltration into the dermis. I felt another little bump on her hip yesterday that I'm now concerned is another mast cell tumor--it feels very similar to the tiny one on her chest wall that the vet and I pondered just watching. It's about the same size (4-5 mm). I don't think I can afford to have it removed immediately though. I'm considering taking out insurance on Abby since I have a feeling we will be doing mast cell tumor watch and removal from here on out...I would appreciate some input on that.

The hemangioma was benign, right?

I'm sorry about the MCTs :( that really sucks. I hope that you can find a way to manage them. I know little about insurance, only that you have to be careful about pre-existing conditions.

Here is our current running thread about MCT in a boxer, a breed known for MCTs which often have a less aggressive form than other breeds. Note that the thread was started in 4/2010. Dog is currently till with us, though it may have spread to the brain, it's not clear :(
