Kill it with fire! Or slobber. Your choice.

Postby Jen » Mon Jul 01, 2013 1:18 am

What is this?!? It's about 50% bigger than an almond and when Roscoe tried to eat it through the screen, it either hissed at him or sprayed something at him. (There is some debate among the two-leggeds in the household as to what exactly it was doing.) Whatever it was did not deter Roscoe in the slightest.

looks like a June Beetle (a male, with those red "horns" on the head)- and yes, they will hiss and shriek if threatened.

Crap on a cracker! I was not prepared for the bug to be that big! I'd second June Beetle, Aka, nums for Rosco.

He did not kill it because as soon as DH said, "I think it's spraying something, not hissing," I slammed the glass slider shut.

It was huge, Ashley!

Dang that guy is evil looking!!

The kind we have here get that big but don't have stripes, def no horns & they DEFINITELY don't hiss or spray. Yikes!!!

Our dog when I was a kid *loved* going out on the porch to catch & eat them. So gross!!

Yes, it's a Ten-lined Junebug or June beetle - we sometimes see those here - they are found specifically in the Pacific Northwest, especially in June. Keep porch lights off at night, and if you have a garden, watch out for white larvae which will hatch and destroy roots, grass, vegetables. The good news is that they are great fishing bait! Most of the ones I've seen are about an inch to an inch and a half, but I have seen them up to two and a half inches. Not sure if they hiss or spray...hmmmm...will have to look that up.

That's exactly it, Jean! I looked up June beetle and found "ten-lined" or "watermelon bug" that are common in the PNW. According to Wikipedia, they hiss by pressing their wings down and forcing air out. :)

The June beetles in SLO were *small* and black with slight red accents.

ETA: Kara - you were right too! Didn't mean to ignore you. I looked up June beetle on your say so. ;) Then Jean mentioned the exact kind. :)

Wow, pretty beetle! If it hissed at me, I would probably freak out at first too, but they are pretty neat looking things. In Germany we have similar ones but they are called "May Beetle", and are a member of the family scarabaeidae:

Kids of my parents' generation would catch them and play with them, and get paid pretty well for collecting buckets of them as chicken feed for farmers. When I was a kid, they had almost vanished (probably from use of certain insecticides and pesticides that are now illegal) and were pretty rare, so finding one was always a great adventure. I heard that nowadays they have recovered pretty well and are on their way of becoming a pest again. I just read that during a "Plague" in 1911 on 4,448 acres about 22 million of them were collected. :eek2:

Ack! The beetles here have no flight control and crash into me when I'm out with the dogs in the evening. I can't imagine having something the size of a 747 airplane doing that! That thought is creeping me out. I'll just go put my head under the covers now.
