Pappy, SIT

Postby my2cotons » Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:54 am

We went for our walk this morning. Unlike yesterday, it was fairly uneventful. When we got back to the main gate, I decided not to just open it and let Pappy run through it, but rather to make him sit. I told him to sit and then waited at least a full 2 minutes before I started videoing. The video is 1 1/2 minutes. So it took at least 3 1/2 minutes before he sat. That was the main gate into our property. Then when we got to the back gate of our yard, I told him to sit and he did almost immediately! Wow - he never does that! Then when we got to the back door he got stubborn again. Took probably a minute before he sat, but finally he did. It doesn't sound like much, but it was to us. I usually either force him to sit or give up in these instances, so I was proud of myself for hanging in there. :)
By the way, it is very windy, so if you have your sound up you will hear it. You can just turn the sound up toward the end to hear me squealing with pleasure when he sits. :)

Yay for you! That was really nice, and so funny -- Pappy was like 'well, I'll just go in over here .. oops, can't get in that way ... h'mmm, wonder when she's gonna let me in ... oh ALRIGHT, I'll SIT!' My sister's Bearded Collie does the same thing. Looks for all the ways around the request and then almost huffs 'geez, OKAY!'

That was 3 minutes of your life very well-spent. You got what you wanted, you didn't get stressed, the dog got to see what non-compliance got him (that would be nothing!), and then he got praised for doing the right thing. Nicely done!

Hooray for sticking it out! Before long, he'll lose the stubbornness, I bet. I have a "sit before you get leashed up" rule, and "sit before I open the door" rule, among others, and it's never taken my dogs long to figure out that I can wait FOREVER if that's what it takes. :)

Just an update - Pappy now sits IMMEDIATELY at both gates for me. Sometimes I don't even have to ask for a sit - we just arrive at the gate and he sits. :)

Nice. You re-shaped his view of the event of arriving at the gate.
