Little Dax' first title!

Postby Sabine » Sun Mar 24, 2013 2:31 pm

Only my dog friends will understand why anybody would drive 400+ miles one way and be excited about a dog finding a rat underground and barking at it for one minute. LOL

On his 3rd attempt since fall last year Dax finally passed the AWTA Open class yesterday! It was a lot of fun to see how he shot from the release point (10 feet from the entrance in the Open class) into the tunnel like the cork out of a champagne bottle. lol He also made a proper racket underground when he found the rat, digging, whining, barking and chewing on the protective wooden dowels.

In AWTA you are allowed to bump up to the next higher class the same day, so we gave the Certificate class a try too. Unlike the previous classes, for this the den has a false exit (no rat), a dead end, and some other twists. Plus the judge had us recall the dogs out of the ground after they worked the rat for one minute (she removed the rat cage for that.) Dax didn't pass because he went over time, but that's fine for his first try. All that counts is that he had so much fun, I barely heard a peep out of him on our 8 hour trip home. :p

It wasn't going up Friday, but the trip home was a lot longer on Saturday. Part of that was my own fault, I didn't want to stay on the 5 because it was such a beautiful day. I had miscalculated daylight hours a bit though, so didn't get as much out of my detour as I had hoped. Next time I drive up I will definitely not drive home right after the trial, but the next day. Even though I usually don't mind driving, this was a bit much.

The next AWTA trial at PDIA will be on November 23rd, maybe we can arrange to get together finally. :)

It's a long drive. I went to school in San Diego, and remember those trips well....back then I had a Vega, so it was always an adventure

That would be cool. Sounds like that would be Thanksgiving break, so good timing.

Yay Team Dax! I wish we did terrier stuff around here. Because a certain cairn terrier is stealing my heart...

You need to check out what UKC is offering these days, they have become a lot more active with new clubs springing up everywhere. Also, JRTCA has two wonderful trials in WI that you need to check out. They often have non-sanctioned classes for other terriers to participate in.

What's even better though, many JRTCA clubs do regular practice fun days, e.g. once a month, or bimonthly, and welcome other terriers as well.

Check out Chewbacca here running a race lol :

Lastly, check out BHA, maybe you can get something going in your area!

How come Chewbacca doesn't have to have a muzzle?

Jen, at the fun runs we do let friendly dogs run without muzzle, especially the ones that have never raced before. Muzzles are only mandatory at sanctioned events.

Dax hates his muzzle (still, unfortunately) so he sometimes doesn't finish a race but stops before the finish hole and tries to take it off, so I'm still trying to motivate him by alternating runs with the muzzle on and off during practice.

Oh and btw, that Yorkie's name is not Chewbacca, I just call him that because he looks like Chewbacca in some of those photos. lol

I think all Yorkies look like Chewbacca, so I thought it was an excellent name. :)

Thanks for the info.

Hey now, technically this is Dax's SECOND title. He earned his trial certificate in Go-To-Ground at his very first JRTCA trial. You just couldn't send it in until he was one year of age. So now he's a multi-titled terrier.
