And more on the Wonder Twins

Postby Trademarkbark » Sun Nov 20, 2011 6:20 pm

On Saturday, they both earned the American Temperament Test Society's Temperament Tested (TT) titles, and they are the first of their breed to be tested. So proud of my girls setting records and precedents for the breed!

Yay for girl power!

Are AHT's really new? I thought they'd been around for awhile, so I was a little surprised that none had been temperament tested before. I love that your girls are so well rounded. :)

There have been Rat Terrier tested (a very small number). The first hairless RT was in 1971, with the first litter being born in the early 80s. The AHT was registered as a "Hairless Rat Terrier" until 2004, when the breed had sufficient numbers to become recognized as a separate breed by UKC. There is no way of knowing if any of those Ratties tested previously were hairless or coated (although doubtful - when talking to the head tester, he said he only saw RTs being tested in the Mid-West). So technically, even if the others were Hairless Rats, mine are the first AHTs that will show up in the statistics page. ;)

Temperament Testing is not common in small breed dogs - I've heard quite a few Sheltie people state they won't do it because "We don't have attack dogs!". They don't bother to research and find out what the test is comprised of and what is expected of other breeds (non-"attack dog" breeds).

I've known some shelties that could be classified as attack dogs!

That is way cool.

The Parson Russell Terrier parent breed club in Germany mandates temperament testing before dogs can be bred (or rather, you can breed, but if the parents aren't tested and passed, the puppies won't be registerable). I love that.
