The potty patch is a success!

Postby Liz » Tue Apr 12, 2011 10:40 pm

...Yeah, these are my victories.

We are still doing three walks a day, but the kiddie pool of sod and soil for the very late night pottys is working!

Hey, that's a significant victory, considering that the alternative is lots of cleanup in the house! Glad C and L took to the program and are comfortable with it.

wow, even works with the leg-lifting?

ya know what... I should make one of these for Arlo to sleep on in the yard!! oh my god, brilliant! There's garden and patio stone beck there, no grass or even soft dirt (I've fenced the garden so my landlord doesn't get mad and so the pretty flowers will grow, so he can't lie in the garden dirt)

hrmm... potential issue is the dogs using the potty-patch-turned-sleeping-spot as a potty patch. potty-patch-turned-sleeping-spot-turned-potty-patch. That's a pickle.

How much did it cost to put together, ballpark?

The uber fast way:

Hard plastic kiddie pool from Kmart - 45in x 6in is $12, 60in x 9in is $17
Bag of 2 cubic foot Sod top soil - $7
4 pieces of sod - $2.19 each (4 pieces were too much, so now they are spread around the outside of the patch.)

If you wanted, you could get pressure treated 2x6 wood and make a raised bed to whatever size you want. Lowe's sells 40mil shower pan liners in a 4'x4' piece for about $7 that would make a perfect bottom liner. I was being lazy, so here's what I did.

1) buy pool
2) drill drainage holes in bottom
3) toss in topsoil
4) shove dog noses out of the way
5) flatten out topsoil
6) pull Lenny out of the pool
7) add sod; rip to fit curves
8) lock dogs inside the house
9) water pool and toss trash
10) finally let dogs out on patio

Great job, Liz! I'm glad they're using it, I'm sure it's MADD apt living & midnight potty breaks much more bearable!

That's cool that this is working for you. Are they only using it for peeing?

Hmm, this might be an idea for next winter in my garage because my poor back doesn't have much snow shoveling ability left. Even if the sod grass was dead, it wouldn't be much more dead than what's out in the yard. Maybe this along with potty pads. ChiChi was paper trained and pees on command. The other two like to pee on her spot and also have pee commands. It's the pooping that I might need grass for.

Only other dog owners would understand these thoughts.... :p

Will you have to mow it?

Yeah, water too, but I have a handheld battery operated edger (with the teeth blades that rock back and forth) so it won't be a big deal at all. I already had that.

The best part is that I can replace any dead sod for about $2. So I'd guess my "start up" costs were about $25-$30. This is WAY cheaper than getting fake grass or buying the Potti-Patch for hundreds of dollars.

...Heh. As I was writing this I went to go take a picture and found a couple of presents, so off to clean that up and I'll post pictures later.

Meanwhile, apparently my foster boy Levi prefers poo'ing on concrete. We went in s home visit this evening in *The* trendy part of town - outdoor cases, beautiful people, fancy convertibles....
and Levi, pooping right in the middle of the intersection, as the convertible sat there watching & waiting, along with the crowded patio @ the cafe.

Oy!
