You know those memes about not leaving dogs in hot cars?

Warning - this is a tragic and sad story.

We've all seen those warnings and memes about dogs in hot cars, but I'd never imagined that someone I know would ever be personally involved in trying to save a dogs life in this circumstance.

My husband, Paul, came home from work last night VERY shaken and almost in tears. I have never ever seen him this upset over anything. Toward the end of the day someone ran into the bike store where he works and yelled for help about a man in distress and something about 2 dead dogs. Paul ran out to try to help and found and elderly man in a very hot car with 2 dogs that were already dead and 2 more that were in extreme distress. He tried to resuscitate the ones that were dead and brought cool water to try to help cool the other 2 down. He said one of the little dogs still alive was vomiting and might have been peeing blood. The man's son was either there or showed up pretty quick and said that the elderly gentleman had loaded the 4 dogs into the car and had driven around for 4 hours in that car with the heater on! It was close to 90F degrees here yesterday and very humid. The elderly man has Alzheimer's, believed he was driving to his home in Baltimore, and believed that's where he was when he pulled into the parking lot still in Newark, DE. Paul said the man had no idea what was going on or why.

Paul thinks he might have saved one of the dogs, a little white Chihuahua type. I'm not so sure, but I let him believe that. I didn't want to ask him any more questions. He was so upset that he was sounding a little irrational because he was also expressing concern about the care of our own dogs and worrying that he might accidentally leave one of ours outside in this heat and humidity. I had to reassure him several times that our dogs are fine and would continue to be ok. He rarely drinks but had a couple of shots of vodka before bed.

Sorry for this horrible story. I had to tell someone and have no one to talk to here about it. It's almost making me sick to my stomach having typed all that out, so I can't imagine how my poor husband managed with the visual stuck in his head.

Oh my goodness, Judy—I'm so sorry for everyone. :( I hope Paul got some rest, too.

It's heartbreaking that so many of us see those reminders and think 'well, DUH!' -- and yet there are still plenty of people who make that fatal mistake. So, so sad for everyone involved in this, including Paul.

Oh how horrible all around. I almost hope the owner never really understands what happened, he wasn't in his right mind. Poor little dogs. Poor Paul! That's likely to haunt him.

How sad. I'm glad your husband was there to help make a difference. Tragic, tragic circumstances, I don't think any one of us would come out of it not completely shaken. :(

How truly awful! Poor Paul, I cannot imagine how awful that was, but it is wonderful that he responded and tried so hard for them.

How incredibly sad :( That just breaks my heart. I am so sorry Paul had to go through that, but I'm glad he was able to offer some help. I hope the elderly gentleman is able to get the help he needs. It sounds like his car keys need to be taken away. Bless his heart.

Yeah, it's hard to feel heroic when other little lives were lost. I hope he can get past it. :(
