Guess the terrier????

Postby LisaT_II » Sun Mar 22, 2015 1:55 pm

This dog found me the other day, in the middle of the forest. He's a bit messed up, some skin issues that don't show in the pics, the ears and most of the tail have lost all their fur. No collar, no chip, not neutered, one rear dewclaw - I think he was dumped :(

Thoughts on the breed?

He's broad and a bit stocky in the front chest area, elbows bow out a bit, and narrow in the hind. Overall, a slim dog, which I'm not sure shows in the pictures, he's about 10 lbs, and the vet tech said no more than 3 years old.

If I met him walking in the park and his person told me he was a Rat Terrier, I wouldn't bat an eye or trot off to Fb to mock them or nuthin.

I vote for Rat Terrier, too. There is such a huge range in their appearance, at least on the flyball teams around here.

What does Jazz think? Did you just find her brother?

Rat Terrier was my first thought too, glad to know that I wouldn't have embarrassed myself had I said it out loud :)

Jazz is not sure about him, they haven't found a medium ground yet, and he's still pretty freaked out about a lot of things - just now figuring out what a screen door is too. There is another woman in the dog hiking group that will take him if I don't think it will work here. There are definite tradeoffs of going to a two dog household. I can sneak Jazz into a number of places, two dogs, not so much. But she really might like a buddy.

He has lost fur and pigment on the paws - pads and the tops and a bit up the legs. I was wondering if it was from walking or trauma, but I think I see the same think inside his mouth too, so something additional is surely going on with him.

I've always wanted a rat terrier, maybe partly because they said Indy was part Rat, and reading about them seemed like a neat personality.

That said, I have asked the other woman in the dog hiking group if she still would like him. Jazz here requires a lot of care and attention, and I'm just not sure that won't be compromised. If Jazz's health were more stable, it would be easier. I also like that I can sneak Jazz into a lot of places, like my work, which I wouldn't be able to do with two dogs. So, most likely, he won't be here, but will have a home with other dogs, a cat, and a dog lover who already have a niece and nephew that adore him. How lucky is this guy?

The bowing at the elbows had made me wonder about maybe a fox terrier. That's also what the vet tech said today when he came with us to Jazz's appointment. She said Rat or Fox.

He's very sweet, and very stable. Once he settles, I think he's going to be an amazing dog. I am really going go miss him - I'll have to go on more hikes with the group just so I get to see him... With Jazz's issues (IBD, lupus, now liver issues), I just really need to concentrate my resources on her.

Not a Fox Terrier. Not a Toy Fox. He's never even met one of either of those breeds. Rat Terrier, or a JRT/Parson/Jack cross who just happened to turn out to look just like a Rat.

QBert, my twin!

And the "Jack-a-Rat" is a common cross, so yes, could be a mix of that. But agree, not TFT and definitely not SFT!

At least you don't get labeled a designer breed by default. If I have to explain that Max is not a cockapoo just because he has a curly topknot one. more. time... :takethat:

I've had someone insist that Cinnabon must be a Papillon because of her long hair. She had no clue that Chi's can be longhaired or that Paps are mostly white with colored markings. I guess the white stripe on Cinn's face and the white legs had her fooled, and it didn't count that the dog's entire body and tail is reddish gold.

I will never forget the time I rushed off to an emergency vet with a sick foster Crested - the vet had stepped out of the exam room, and I grabbed the chart he'd left behind to read his notes - which included noting "severe bilateral hair loss" as a symptom. I had quite a time explaining to him that the "severe hair loss" was completely and absolutely normal, expected, and correct for this particular dog.
At least you don't get labeled a designer breed by default. If I have to explain that Max is not a cockapoo just because he has a curly topknot one. more. time... :takethat:
I'm sure there are a dozen or more people who if asked would tell you I am delusional over my yorkiepoo. Turns out if you don't do a 100% breed standard groom on your purebred dog, they actually turn into a designer breed over time.

yep - I'm frequently baffled to realize how many people, even "dog fancy" people, have absolutely no idea that Cresteds aren't all hairless. People who exhibit a fair bit of familiarity with the breed, even, but have no idea there is such a thing as a coated variety. LH Chi? whut? Phalene? come again? Wire haired Vizsla/Ibizan/Dachshund? that's crazy talk. Wheaten Scottie? Fawn Bouvier? you're making things up.

I was told that Ranger HAS to be a mix because he has a blue eye...

He of course could be mixed, but not because of the blue eye necessarily haha

Not at this place. When I took Dora in, I put her breed as COLLIE and Tim glanced at the computer and said to me "She just put her in as a Border Collie!" I asked her about it and she just blankly looked at me, then said "Well, you didn't put down what type of Collie you thought she was!". Suppressing the desire to strangle the crap out of her, I informed her that she was a purebred Collie of the smooth coated variety, there was no 'think' involved, and I wanted to be sure her records reflected the correct breed in case she were ever lost and needed to be identified! She just shrugged and said "OH, I've never seen a Collie before, so I just figured she was a Border Collie mix." Gah!!
