Weird.

Postby Jen » Sat Jan 03, 2015 10:49 pm

My comfort-seeking, sun-worshiping hound just asked to go outside in the freezing weather and then chose to lie down on his bed out there. DH made him come in, but I have no idea why Roscoe would do that.

That is very out of character. I hope he turns a corner with this. Much love to you and Roscoe and your DH. I know he is super worried. Praying for you all right now.

Well, he just completely collapsed shortly after I posted. Splayed out legs, Bambi-style. We lifted him to a standing position and he couldn't lie down. He'd start to sit, but when he bent his back legs they would threaten to uncontrollably collapse, so he'd stand back straight. It took about five minutes before he just accepted collapsing and then lowered his front half. He's sound asleep now.

Of course neither vet is open Sunday. :(

Ack! I started to post something about Roscoe being outside, but then your next post appeared. I'm sorry this is happening, Jen. I'd be very concerned about the collapsing. Do you think it's weakness added to his back problems or something more dire? ((Hugs)) to you. I know how hard this is. :(

I'm inclined to think related to back. DH is inclined to think more dire. He's making noises like we ought to be calling the in-home euthanasia person sooner than later, but I'm resisting.

OTOH, I am the one who thought a 30yo horse would recover from a broken hip in the middle of the coldest winter he'd ever experienced by far and look how well that worked out for him and me.

Can you feel along his back to see if he's got any warm spots and apply ice? It's a small bandaid, but it might give him so relief while you and Joe talk and see if he recovers.

Hugs. It's so hard.

Oh no! I know I have had indoor dogs that suddenly wanted to lie outside in the cold and rain when they were not feeling well (Oliver and Sadie both did this) - the cold allows them to go into a hypothermic state, sort of like hibernation where their body doesn't use as many resources and their mind can drift away from pain or discomfort. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Oh Jen, that's worrisome. I hope it's just a sore back and you can get him some relief. Hang in there....I'm holding all of you in my thoughts.

He ate more oatmeal and broth, but he still seems out of sorts. Going to try for a vet appt tomorrow afternoon.

He's clearly sore getting up and down, but he got up on his own and put himself in his pen to wait for breakfast when we woke up this morning. I was surprised he didn't eat more since he seemed interested.

His eyes are weirdly goopy too. Like thick drool consistency tears.

Oh no, I'm so sorry, so upsetting. :( I think my timeline is all messed up now; it seems like the collapse was before the oat+broth breakfast? Jean's comment about the cold makes sense, esp if he seems somewhat better/more mobile now. Ice on back might feel good, like Jill said. When MP's thing was all still more mysterious and leaning towards back injury, the rehab vet felt through the spine and said there's points that would make a dog collapse when pressed, if it had been an injury/swelling.

Thinking of you guys!!

He seems to be doing okay. Not *good,* but not bad either. He ate about 1/3 cup of mushy oatmeal and broth at breakfast. He slept most of the day except for a brief potty break and squirrel stare down.

We went to dinner with my grandparents and cooked 1 cup rice before we left. He ate 1/2 of it & beef broth at a soupy consistency before we left. He got up when we got home and "bounced" down the hall, ears up and tail wagging. He gobbled up the other 1/2 of soupy rice and broth, went outside to pee, begged for some petting and then went back to sleep, which is what he has been doing ever since.

I forgot I have a parent meeting tomorrow afternoon that she wanted to do during break, so I can't skip it. Hopefully DH can take him to the vet, but he's on call. If not, I might even see if my mom can take him at lunch and I'll be there via phone.

Oh, man. What a relief!!! "Not bad" is much better! :) I hope the rest of the day is uneventful and that the vet visit goes well. Many hugs.

I'll take not bad! And I love hearing that he bounced down the hall, wagging away. :)

Is there a reason he's only eating carbs?

No vet (currently waiting for my late parent  ). But DH says he's much perkier today, and he ate his breakfast. Definitely vet tomorrow. No meetings for sure!

He's getting carbs because that's all he'd eat. Even my Christmas roast was turned down (with Bella and Scout lurking to take it off my hands should I so desire). I was going to give him a few more meals of food I know he's willing to eat and then introduce some boiled chicken and maybe pumpkin.
