Shiloh shepherd

Postby maxs_mommy » Thu Nov 13, 2014 10:06 pm

I ran across a reference to these on a fb post and wondered if anyone had encountered them. They look to be giant GSD's with intentionally good top lines. Just curious about them.

I've met two. Not sure if they're from the same breeder or not. I kind of hope so, because picture a huge, long haired neurotic GSD and that's what I've encountered in the two I met. A 6 month old puppy "defending" the house and family and charging people at the door and dog park. Brilliant.

I've only met one at an outside pizza cafe.

LOTS of hair. LOTS. It was a HUGE dog. Almost the size of a great dane.

And it high-pitched barked almost the entire time we were there.

I lived not far from someone who was in on the ground floor when Shilohs were a very new thing - haven't paid much attention since but like so many other 'niche' breeds you can find very nice ones if you look hard enough. The few I've met recently have left me thinking the breeders prioritized size and coat above all else. Sound of mind and body was not a phrase that came to mind.

So are they really just GSD's backbred and linebread to get the biggest hairiest dog possible and then renamed as a "new" breed?

Yes and no. There are mutterings of Akita and Malamute crosses among others in many early lines. I know some were focused on breeding what were essentially a giant long hair line of purebred GSD but I'd hesitate to say that's a general truism for the breed.

They are GSD with longer hair. I did a Shiloh Shepherd herding test day and had about 15 dogs attend.
They are a bit more laid back that GSD. Most were mellow and gentle with their sheep.
