Long Lasting, Healthish Chew?

Postby Calypso » Thu Nov 13, 2014 5:50 am

Poor Havana desperately needs something to occupy her time. The problem is that I can't find anything that lasts longer than 45 minutes! I can give her some recreational bones, but she shouldn't have those more than a couple of times a week.

The last couple of "thick" bully sticks I ordered from BestBullySticks were not. Even Pixel can get through a 12 inch stick in about 90 minutes.

Any ideas for chews that aren't hideously expensive but still substantial (she'd love a Himalayan chew, but again, 20-30 minutes maximum for a $15-20 chew)? She is getting her meals in food toys, but only the boring ones until I find out if she can be a bit more active. And once I'm finally home long enough to defrost and mix (hopefully Monday!), I'll put home prepared food into kongs and freeze them which will take longer to eat.

How about hooves or antlers? Mine wouldn't touch them, but I've heard other dogs love them.

I've found more dogs interested in the hooves than the antlers - little Mitzi has to have a good long chew on the hoof every night before bed. It is softer than the antlers so less hard on the teeth, but durable enough that (so far) none of the dogs here have done more than rough up the side of it and pull off the tiniest shreds to eat. Because of the indentation in the hoof, I have been known to smear a little peanut butter in it to get a dog interested enough to give it a go.

I forgot about hooves. The antlers are what keep vetrinary orthodontist in business, according to the one I spoke to. That is something to look into.

Are you into deer season? If you can cajole a few spatulas from a processor, they last a good while and are relatively tooth-friendly.

It is getting to be deer season. And I've got a houseful of hunters coming for Thanksgiving!

For my SA board and train client, I put peanut butter in a very big kong, a bully stick in it so it's sort of half in and half out, and froze it. That lasted quite a while and you could sub out PB for somehting else.
