Going from two... to three... maybe!

Postby Aubergine » Mon Oct 07, 2013 11:15 am

It's been WAAAAY too long since I've been on ODO, and I miss everyone! :D I try to read when I can but don't always make time to post. Anyway. Some news

The fiance and I saw online, visited in person, and promptly fell in love with a 10 year old Basset at a local animal control facility  Her name is Becky and she is as sweet as can be! I can't believe someone would just abandon an old dog at the shelter :( She is in good shape, other than missing a LOT of teeth (looks like she had a dental recently as there are some stitches in her gums). She has bladder stones as well, so will be having surgery this week, and we've submitted an application to adopt her! :eek2:

For those of you who've gone from two dogs to three, is it a big adjustment? I feel like Nutmeg and Spratley are a true unit, and they've been best buddies for almost five years now. I think it's more my perception than anything - Spratmeg are onedogsamedog in many ways, and I think it will be odd to see an extra dog in the pack! But, I know that dogs are much more flexible and fluid than that, and I'm sure she'll fit in. Becky is a good match personality and energy wise (we had a meet-and-greet and they all ignored each other - score! )

Anyway - eeps! I am so excited I can hardly concentrate on anything else!

aww, nice! She's cute. I'd say maybe start with some barriers up, let her get her bearings in the house alone for a few minutes, walk together before going in, maybe another meet and greet (or more) before bringing her home? Do your dogs usually have any issues with new dogs in the house? (my house is very dramatic in that respect, so I am conservative when it comes to this sort of thing...) manage resources carefully (toys, food, beds, bowls, etc etc)

CUTE!

Overall I find three logistically harder (kids and dogs) but when they all settle in and dog #3 knows how things work, I don't find it tough.

oh, she's beautiful! What a grand old gal.

You may find the Spratmeg continue to be onedogsame dog and that you feel like you have 2 1/2 dogs. I have a couple of pairs that I can handle as if they were one critter in many situations, and those don't feel like any extra burden.

OMG she is BEAUTIFUL! So excited for you!
I find a bit of an adjustment going from two to three, but primarily in terms of their walks as I can walk two dogs together (sort of - not my first choice) but not three, so it means doing a minimum of two seperate walks and for a "dogs gotta have exercise and mental stimulation" person like me, that means a minimum of four walks a day - a pain on the Wet Coast.
But eventually we get into a routine and especially with older dogs it works out fine.

Awww, I love bassets. Not sure if it's the wrinkly legs or the long soft ears or the long body, but i love them. My goddog is a basset.

Going from 2 to 3 for us was kind of the opposite since we added a puppy, but Pixel and Havana occupy each other and Cousetau joins in when he feels like it, but mostly he watches them and hopes for treats. So in that sense it's sort of like having only 2 1/2 dogs like Kara said. Except at meal time. Then we definitely have 3.

I hope it all works out!

jeeze, my three dogs are like 499.5 dogs. 125 are Elsie, 374 are Lucy, and 1/2 is Arlo - unless he's scared of potential scary noises and can't walk on the trail where L can walk, then add another 200 dogs for him. For a total of 699.5 dogs in my house. Plus tax, so I actually have 790.435 dogs right now.

How sweet is she?! Squee! I can't speak to having multiple dogs, Max would lose his marbles but I'm sure things will work given some adjustment time. Good luck!

Aaaah! How cute is she!? Are you going to keep her name? Because I think Becky is such the perfect Basset name. No help on the 2 to 3 front, but how hard can it be? ;)

There's time I feel like that, too - but mostly when I have a certain young ADHD border collie staying with me. The trick to having THREE dogs feel like THREE dogs and not 790.435 dogs is to adopt only the old ones!

I didn't find the change from 2-3 that hard when we added Landis and still had Sadie. Freddy was and still is super mellow and so Sadie and Landis kept each other occupied much like Calypso's arrangement. Spratmeg will probably stick together and Becky will be the chill one. She is so super cute. Is her leg ok? I know Basset's have goofy short legs, but hers looks a little twisted. I want to see more pictures of her. She's so smoochy!

We got approved! :D Not sure when we can pick her up as she is recuperating from bladder stone surgery, but hopefully soon  I AM SO EXCITED!!!

Amanda, her leg is a little shonky, but she walks with no problems on it. It's just... penguinny? I guess? She is actually quite leggy for a Basset, and other than needing a bath and some TLC, she is in good shape. And we'll keep her name, for sure. It just suits her, ya know? ;)

I've gone from 1 to 2 to 3, all the way up to 6 at one time (actually more when I lived at home as a kid). As long as the temperaments blend, I've found there is no difference except an additional food bowl and one more cookie to grab at crating time. ;)

Congrats on the new kid!

She is gorgeous and probably has lovely, houndy, yummy-smelling ears!! If I am remembering correctly, I sent you some frames for xmas xchange a million years ago. Let me know if Becky needs one. :) I am happy to send another.
