Shhhh! Beagle is sleeping

Postby SherriA » Sat Sep 28, 2013 2:39 pm

I took Oliver to the Beagle Bash today. Two hour drive up to Auburn, MA, but worth it, because he had so much fun. Beagles and beagle lovers everywhere you looked! He got to meet and greet dozens of hound buddies, got fawned over by oodles of people, and got lots of treats for being a good, appropriate boy. He was scampering around like an 8 yr old, not a nearly 18 yr old. What a great day!

All that fun takes a toll on an old dude, though. He fell asleep as soon as I got him back in the crate to drive home and slept the entire time. We pulled into the drive way and I had to wake him up to get out of the car. Of course, I had to snap a picture first :)

Sleepy beagle is sleeping. Do not disturb!!

How much fun for both of you! It's great that he still feels up to being a social butterfly. :)

He doesn't really want to play with other dogs, and never did. But he does enjoy a nice "hello" sniff, and especially loves all the people paying attention to him. He was in his glory for over 3 hours.

ETA: SO MANY FAT BEAGLES! That was the only disheartening thing about the day. There were a couple that I don't know how they even managed to walk. Lots of nice, athletic, in shape beagles too, of course, but the really overweight ones make me sad. They can't possibly be comfortable, and people just don't understand that loving them with food doesn't do them any favours.

I forgot to share this here. Oliver got to try out Nosework at the Bash! I wish there was a class nearby, because he thought it was the best game ever.

There was a beagle in our Nosework class. So fun to watch that hound nose go to work. I'll bet Oliver thought it was a blast. You could play games like that at home. Who cares if your technique is just right? He'll have fun finding the treats. :)

So fun!!!

if you have no desire to compete, I can write up some steps to help you get to "backyard nosework" level. I couldn't guarantee you wouldn't pick up bad habits following them, but you could have fun at home.

That's why I love NW. It's so easy to do anywhere with almost no prep.

Gee a beagle with a good nose, who woulda thought?
Even if there isn't a nosework class near you, you could always set something up at home for him. Of course, he IS a beagle, and you just might not want to encourage him to sniff stuff out for a reward! I've known beagles who were very adept at opening cupboards to get to garbage or refrigerator doors to get to food.

I love the sleepy picture of him.

Thanks, Sherri! I'll have to try to get a recent pic of him up. He's looking quite distinguished these days. :)
