Hand Stripping

I am actually really enjoying hand stripping. I was a little worried about the grooming of a Border Terrier, but I am finding the process pretty satisfying. It’s nice to know that my efforts will last for several months instead of needing to be redone tomorrow. This is our second round since we got ...

Re: Talk to me about skin/allergy problems

I don’t have a lot of experience in this department, but I have seen many dogs on apoquel at our boarding facility and many of them don’t seem to have as much relief as you would expect for an expensive drug. I also have difficulty feeling comfortable with the type of drug that it is and would hold ...

Re: Puppy Buyer Ettiquette

Great article. I try to be this puppy buyer. It’s working out very well so far with our new breeder. In hindsight, I was the same with zeke’s breeder and she didn’t react the way I expected. Should have been a red flag.

Re: When a friend gets a designer dog from a breeder

I guess the silver lining is that she’s not dumping the dog after it didn’t turn out the way she expected? I meet sooooo many people that this happens to them. Doodles are predictably nothing like they are advertised to be. I have a 45 lb 6 month old doodle in my class that was promised not to grow ...

Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

We are going with Compass’ Dracaena Cinnabari Everyone loves the dragon connection. Looks like the call name will be Elliot for a boy (Pete’s Dragon) and not sure about a girl name yet. Some possibles are Saphira (dragon from Eragon), Nowi (video game dragon/human, not my fave), Kaida (supposedly me...

Re: Feeding pups

Maybe try goat’s milk? I have seen many breeders start puppies on goat’s milk and then add raw ground meat to make a slurry for the pups.

My husband immediately started quoting Finding Nemo. I’m not sure I can put up with more than a decade of “Helllllooooo Bruce” and “Here’s Brucey!” and “Fish are friends, not food.” rofl lol rofl

Bruce the Spruce is still a possibility. Bruce is great name for a dog. Lol But the name would have to be Compass’ Spruce. Or maybe Red spruce?

Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

I am trying to find a name that sounds good enough that when announced it doesn’t sound weird. We likely won’t base the call name off of it in any way. I talked to Kara and as we all know, she rocks at the puppy naming game. Noble Fir (the type of Christmas tree we always get) Basa Oak (a famous old...

Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

We prefer a boy, but we are more interested in temperament. We probably won’t know which until closer to the end of April.

Ideas so far:
Girls- Sassafras, Sugar Maple, Sweet Birch, Juniper, Arroyo Willow
Boys- Coast (or Canyon) Live Oak, Noble Fir, Red Shanks
Either- Velvet Ash, Western Redbud

Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

Pupdate week 1 came this morning. All puppies growing and doing well. Early neurological stimulation started at day 3 and will continue through day 16. This is the “tree” litter. All puppies will have the kennel name Compass and then a variety of tree. Either the common name or the Latin name...

Great article on puppy skeletal development

Our new Wirehaired Vizsla breeder sent this last night and I found it very interesting. Growth plates and muscle development in puppies is so fascinating to me. Appropriate exercise for puppies comes up so often in my puppy classes, too. https://www.dogworksfitness.com/single-post/2017/12/28/The-1-a...

Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

And being a terrier, she is not going to let herself be run over by a larger dog, I'm sure! :blah: Nope!! She rules the roost when we visit my dad. She knocks his 10 month old boxer for a loop when he steps out of line. It’s hilarious. He is super pushy with their 11 year old boxer who lets him get...

Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

Thanks! We are anxiously anticipating the update coming this weekend. I love this breeder. She communicates often and with lots of detail. She actually had a very similar experience with her first wire (though hers came from a breeder in the US). I think Jovie will approve. We thought we might wait ...

Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

Before we rehomed Zeke, I began a dialogue with a breeder in the US about her Wirehaired Vizslas and our desire to try again for this dog that I still feel fits our family pretty well. I told her we would be waiting for Zeke or Landis to move on before we added another dog. And then after we rehomed...

Re: My AAT dog is so awesome...

So excellent!! I love programs like this. Freddy was a therapy dog in this type of context. He didn’t appreciate being loved on or smothered with affection. And he wasn’t a particularly good shoulder to cry on, but he thrived at getting kids to use their voice and work on his cues. If they were wish...

Puppy Culture

Has anyone watched the DVDs or know much about it? I ordered them and they should be arriving today. I wanted them for some prep work to help support my puppy classes that I am teaching as well as for preparation for a future puppy. I think I know most of the program from reading and following the p...

The AKC will honor DMWYD titles. They will happily take your money and add their letters to the dogs name. They are essentially the same thing.

I’m an evaluator for this title. If we were all closer we could schedule a trick dog test together. Have fun with this! I will definitely be getting all the trick titles on Jovie.

Little Hiker

Jovie is becoming a wonderful hiking companion. She checks in regularly when we are in areas she can be off leash. She walks politely on leash when it is required or needed. I worried getting a Border Terrier that off leash hikes wouldn’t be possible, but so far she is doing so great. And she just c...
