Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

Three more sleeps! The litter is narrowed down to 4 choices. Temperament assessments are tomorrow. The breeder hopes she will be whittled down to two after temp assessments. We will probably decide which puppy on Wednesday or Thursday. I fly in late Wednesday. Staying to hang out for a day, then tak...

Re: So I’m liking the little dog, who knew?

I have a Papillon in my obedience one class right now and she’s a riot. I could see myself with one of those someday.

Oh no! Have you spoken to the rescue yet? Maybe they will pay for the procedures? You’ve had some bad luck with the vet bills lately. :/

Probiotics: human grade vs dog specific

Does anyone have info about using a human grade probiotic vs a humans’ supplement? I’m in a conversation about Purina’s fortiflora supplement and there was some push back on my suggestion that they could just purchase a human supplement instead. The argument was that dog gut flora differs from ours ...

Re: Got Stay? May 2018 Training Challenge

Well, I figured that since we were already halfway through April that I would start it in May. And maybe with some extra time, more people will see the thread and join in. But feel free to start training now! Jean- in reference to training stay vs on your mat, I treat the mat cue as an implied stay....

Got Stay? May 2018 Training Challenge

For May we are going to challenge our dogs to build their Stay behavior! We will officially start May 1. Here are the guidelines: 1. Kick off with a short description of your goal behavior as well as where your starting point is. 2. Commit to working on this behavior throughout the month. 3. Check i...

Re: Heartworm treatment

Get better soon, dude! Sorry it wasn’t a false positive, but sounds like best case scenario for the situation you’re in... keep us posted! There are a couple of really good Facebook pages/groups for enrichment ideas. Canine enrichment Joy is one and I think the other is just called Canine enrichment.

That sounds fun! We are working toward the CGC (no jumping on people, little Miss!) and tricks. I think we can get the Novice tricks title now. I just need to get my boss to sit still long enough test me. :)

Re: Maybe a new Wirehaired Vizsla in my future

5 weeks old as of last Wednesday. They went on a field trip to a friend's house to explore a new place and meet new people. I am dying to know who is mine. Temperament test is done around 7 weeks and I probably won't get an answer to that until I am flying to get him/her. 17 sleeps! I get there late...

Re: So I’m liking the little dog, who knew?

That’s great! I love little Jovie. She’s 15 lbs and very much a small dog in my book. She’s even allowed on the couch which has never been allowed before. And my husband is ok with it! Small dogs are fun and even better that Elvis just keeps right up with the big guys.

Here is a great place to start proofing a stay. It says down, but you could substitute sit or mat/place.

Re: Training challenge?

Awesome... let’s do this! I only have one pup at the moment, but stays are a big deal. She rocks them at home. At agility, she can’t do it. Too exciting. Soon I will have two and I totally want to have them respond to cues individually. That is so cool to watch. So maybe a stay challenge for April?

Training challenge?

Would anyone be interested in a group training challenge? Maybe make a month long theme where we all work toward teaching a trick, obedience task, rally, or other such fun and report to the group on how our training is going. We could share videos, help troubleshoot for anyone having a hard time wit...

Re: Visited Zeke today

It is reassuring, in a way, that he is who he is and it wasn't me. I think the big difference for him and his happiness is that he can reset to zero more easily. When we left today, he crashed asleep. She sent me a picture of him and Max zonked out. Not that he didn’t nap here, of course, but he can...

Visited Zeke today

We went to visit Zeke at his new home. It’s been about 8 months since we saw him last. It took him a second to process who he was seeing and then it was like he just erupted in joy. I got a full sniff down and then he jumped up and hugged me. It was sweet. We went for a little hike near his house an...

Re: Hand Stripping

I have done this whole strip by hand this time. It went pretty fast except for the belly. I am going to try to finish her this weekend. The handstripping gurus of the internet say tonwait a minimum of 3 days. But maybe it’s not as big of a deal if it’s only the legs and belly that were recently stri...

Re: Puppy vaccination

I would love to one and done on rabies. But our city law requires the vets to notify them when a rabies vaccine is given to a resident. Then theybknow we are here and we have to license. So once the license is in place, they have to have it every 3 years. Technically all dogs should be licensed, but...

Puppy vaccination

If you had the choice to vaccinate your puppy/dog anyway you wanted, what would you do? I like Dodds’ protocols in general. I have another friend who doesn’t vaccinate at all. I have some anecdotal and coincidental evidence that some of zeke’s challenges could have been triggered by vaccination. The...

Re: Hand Stripping

Sabine, do you find Dax to be particularly sensitive anywhere? Jovie kind of freaks out when I try to strip her belly or back legs. I am taking it super slow, but she needs a bath so bad. And I need to finish stripping her, wait at least 3 days, and then bathe. So the longer it takes to strip, the l...
