Re: New baby needs nursing

Good to know. Poor dog not feeling good at all. Had her to the vet this morning. She was coughing a bit yesterday, but vet gave her antibiotic shot plus Clavamox - she still has a skin rash so the vet was hoping it would kill both problems. Now tonight she is really coughing, apparent she has kennel...

Re: New baby needs nursing

Yeah, I was reading an old thread last night. It mentioned giving potato, and giving small amounts of food 5- 6 times a day. Puppy food was also mentioned as was feeding meat. Didn't think about puppy food when we bought the Evo, but we were concerned with possible allergies since she has a rash on ...

New baby needs nursing

We adopted a 2 year old, maybe lab mix/border collie. Looks a bit like Licorice, only she's short haired, she is as tall or taller than she was. Intro with Smokey was fine, he's not dog aggressive, neither is she. Name is April, which were debating changing. She was considered an outdoor dog by prev...

Licorice is gone

She passed away this morning. I happened to be on the phone discussing euthanasia options with our vets assistant when my son noted she'd stopped breathing and was already gone. Our vet tried to persuade us to euthanize a couple weeks ago, but Bill wasn't ready to let her go. She tried her best to h...

Re: How do you sleep?

Last couple of days I've tried not to pamper her too much during the day. I did get out of the dementia book to let her pace if she wants to, at least it keeps her awake during the day. I think her tummy has bothered her today. I slow cooked a chicken yesterday, then turned around and made stock out...

Re: Canine Dementia

I'll have to go back and give it a look in regards to behavior, I was hoping to find a magic remedy of tips to try, which was nothing I hadn't come up with myself. She had lots of descriptions of symptoms with video links to examples of her own 15 year old dog.

Re: How do you sleep?

Forgot about Valerian, think I've got liquid form, but it tastes bad as I remember. Could try some Rescue Remedy. Will have to check into the L-theanine. Thanks for the suggestions, we're desperate for sleep here!

Re: Canine Dementia

So,got the book on Kindle. It's, "Remember me? loving and caring for a dog with cognitive dysfunction." Author Eileen Anderson Good list of symptoms of CCD, links to videos and pictures of her dog showing signs of dementia, get lost in the house looking for you for example. Upshot is I recognized sy...

Re: How do you sleep?.

We think Licorice is just awake like Sam, sleep so much during the day, then they wake up in the middle of the night. Or its separation anxiety, sundowner dementia. As usual she was up at 2AM and couldn't settle, which goes on for roughly 2-6 AM. We have an old sofa bed in the room she sleeps in, Bi...

Re: Canine Dementia

I probably posted on this, Smokey has it, barking at night. He's not as bad as he was, but still barks. When Bill was on the CFL kick he read about dogs looking up at the light fixture and barking.

How do you sleep?

Ok, so think we've got the UTI under control, she's no longer incontenant, but we can't get her to sleep nights. About the time we are ready to climb in bed, Licorice gets up, just like a kid that needs a drink. Trouble is she usually ends up falling, can't get up, so then she whines, barks- sounds ...

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

Anyone know how much d-mannose we'd give her, weight about 37 lbs. Thinking about ordering. The Now brand has 500mg capsules, but I don't know how much we'd give?

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

We first noticed her looking to see where we were-she'd be on her bed during the day, lift her head and see we were still sitting in front of the TV, and would go back to sleep. Licorice's hearing might be better than her vision -Catarrhs-. We have to leave lights on so she can see, basically leave ...

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

Yes we've done cultures, off the top of my head I remember staff, bacterial infections. The Chinese herbs are working, she is no longer incontenant, no longer leaking. Laundry load has greatly decreased. We finished the Baytril, now we're doing amoxicillin 200mg at bedtime, will do 15 days of that. ...

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

So she's back on Baytril, supposed to just see if we see any improvement just playing by ear for a week before we start the second week of it. We've added a digestive enzyme to her food since a mass was seen in the scan around the pancreas which may or may not be cystic- might account for the weight...

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

Thanks Maisy, we did read on a web site recommendation of a 4 week dose for chronic UTI We are giving Nature's Way Cranberry we by over the counter, cheaper than through the vet. They had prescribed Cranberry Rx, at about double the price we could order ourselves. At looked up Cranberry Rx, I didn't...

Peppermint ointment or ?

Anyone read anything about peppermint to encourage hair growth? I saw it mentioned somewhere. Licorice has worn the hair off her left hip bone, looks so odd, like a picked clean chicken. We got a help um up harness quite some time ago to help lifting her into the car for vet visits and we're letting...

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

She also has balance issues, maybe from the pain meds or she's weak. Don't know if it's a vestibular thing, she doesn't have head tilt which I've read about. Waking up from a long sleep she's apt to fall over if your not there to lend a hand.

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

Thanks for the link whiteboxerboy. We bought 4 crib pads from Wal mart, just washing in warm water has made one break down and leak which means wash the whole bed. Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

Makes sense Judy. My son did a Google search on recurrent UTI which recommended 4 weeks of antibiotic, for dogs with multiple infections. So will have to talk to our vet. We've done retest within a few days of finishing abs that says the infection was killed, but she probably has a soup incubating f...

Licorice Recurrent UTI

Hi everyone! Been awhile since I've been around, thought I'd let you know what we're banging our heads up against. Licorice is on her 7th or 8th UTI, honestly it's hard to keep count. We've done Clavamox, latest antibiotic is Baytril. We're still with the holistic vet and like her very well. It's be...

Re: Cognitive Dysfunction/Barking

I gave him about a 1/2 tsp of lecithin the other night, plus we turned all the lights up. He was pretty easy that night, and was calm. Last night though was a disaster, started out barking out in the pantry, I'd think my son was coming in, but wasn't the case. Son's idea is to go on the Chinese herb...

Re: Cognitive Dysfunction/Barking

I read somebody gave their dogs 1200 mg capsules twice a day, might just give it a try. Side effects I read about mentioned tummy upset, but to back off on the dose in that case. Thanks for the link Lisa, that's exactly it. In the back of my head I was thinking of it as a sundown issue. We were sort...

Re: Cognitive Dysfunction/Barking

I've got some soy lecithin granules which have choline will have to give some of that in his food, maybe not so great it's soy, but I'd gotten it awhile back after reading on line about somebody recommending it as a nutritional supplement. Maybe a tsp or so?
