Re: Orion not doing so great, fistulas, thyroid concerns, cr

Just the topical steroid for his butt. And yes I always measure out his food. 1 cup for breakfast and 1 1/2 cups for dinner. He ate every meal with gusto and never left anything behind, and still lost 6 pounds! I actually bumped him up to 1 1/2 cups am and pm after I found out he lost so much weight...

Re: Orion not doing so great, fistulas, thyroid concerns, cr

Thanks Amanda :) Orion is not the seizure dog, that's Apollo on potassium bromide. The only thing Orion takes is metacam every other day for joint pain. I am planning to do a full thyroid panel through someone, gotta see how much Dr. Dodds costs and if my normal vet offers it.

Orion not doing so great, fistulas, thyroid concerns, crysta

Orion has been feeling pretty crummy lately. 2 weeks ago I lifted up his tail and found a butt riddled with perianal fistulas. We have 6-8 open holes and two different tunnels/tracks, and he was extremely inflamed and painful, on top of diarrhea. Rushed him straight to the emergency vet who put him ...

Re: Freddy had a seizure

That's exactly the word I used to describe Apollo too. The pheno left him a shell of a dog. We kept Apollo on Pheno for about 4 months before we said enough and asked the vet if there was something else he could have. For a while he was on both Pheno and potassium bromide, then we started weaning hi...

Re: Freddy had a seizure

Freddy sounds exactly like Apollo when he started Pheno. Exactly, down to the falling over while trying to pee. My vet assured me it was just his body adjusting to the Pheno. It took a few weeks, but after his body adjusted to the Pheno he did improve a lot. Still not great, but his ataxia did get b...

Re: Freddy had a seizure

You won't get a accurate thyroid reading now that he's on the pheno. pheno throws thyroid numbers completey wacko. You can talk to your vet more about it but when I brought Apollo in to check thyroid stuff after he had surgery on his neck and the hair wasn't growing back my vet said it would be a wa...

Re: Freddy had a seizure

Phenobarb is definitely very depressing, and also the cause of significant muscle weakness. When Apollo started the Pheno his body was a mess for about two weeks and his back end was so weak he could barely hold himself up. Potassium bromide is not a downer at all and does not cause any of that musc...

Re: Freddy had a seizure

This happened to my oldest guy, Apollo. Seizures out of the blue. Never had them in his life and one day he had 4 bad ones within a 14 hour period. Because he had so many in such a short period of time it was considered a "seizure cluster". We opted to start medications because each seizure was gett...

Re: NDR: Betta fish experts?

My boyfriend, who was a crazy about bettas breeder in high school, says he is super stressed out with all the space. A 1/2 to 1 gallon bowl is plenty of room for one betta. They live in rice patty puddles in the wild so they are used to small spaces and little water. They don't really need a filter,...

Re: Higher adoption fees for purebred dogs?

I'm guilty of this...Orion was $350 from a shelter that usually charges $75-$100 adoption fee for dogs. But if me paying a higher adoption fee means more dogs will be able to get shots and fixed...it is not uncommon to see $500 adoption fees for purebreds around here.

Re: Roll call! (aka show off your dogs, everybody!)

Yes, Remus is a Terv :)

Apollo doesn't have the double dew claws, which I am thankful for, because they are creepy, but all his other features do look very Beauceron, but he's just a good ol shelter mix :)

I know you guys don't hear from me very much, but I lurk a lot, so I feel like I know all your dogs so well, and you barely know my guys... Anywho, here are my boys. Apollo, Rott/Shepherd mix (although I'm convinced he's a Beauceron), turned 11 this past February Orion, German Shepherd, turns 7 year...

Although I have had him a little over 2 months, life has been so crazy busy that I am only just now getting around to sharing pictures of my newest addition! Re: help for a friend who has to treat her dog herself

Peanut butter on the wall to keep her occupied/still? Pin her between the wall and a piece of furniture to keep her still with peanut butter on the wall? I know that's probably not the nicest thing, but if treatment is the number 1 priority and she is desperate it's worth a try. Your poor friend and...

Under the circumstances I'd rather have this puppy you mention at my house then to take a chance on some other person other than the breeder "raising" it. But that's just me. ;)

Taking a puppy before he is 8 weeks old

So, I have been talking to a breeder for several weeks now about getting one of her puppies. I like her a lot, and her dogs are gorgeous. This past week she informed me that her mom (who lives in Florida) had to be moved into hospice care and she is not doing well at all. The breeder told me that sh...
