Living Near People - OMG!

I lived on 5 acres on a corner lot across from a nature conservancy for 15 years. It was wooded on 2 sides. I could pretend I lived miles from anywhere. I live in town now and it's going fairly well at the moment at my house. I have some minor training issues with my dogs that I need to address, but...

Takes all kinds

Collies are a breed that have a distinctive enough look that people either think they're adorable or freakish. My sister and my ex were not subtle in their feelings about Havana's appearance and general collie-ness. I never thought much about it, other than they're blind, until recently. People have...

Wow. Scary and promising at the same time. I guess it wouldn't be Ronan if there wasn't an emotional roller coaster!

Re: 10th Annual "What Are You Gonna Do With Your Dogs?" thread

Goals for 2015 Havana - Rehab exercises to get as much strength as possible into that right rear leg. - Have regular visits to two facilities to do therapy work. - Compete in Rally (for realsies!) - Play around with body awareness exercises and work on her core strength. Havana recovered amazingly ...

Re: Growly Guardy Pi

It's not stupidity!!!!! It's hard to see the big picture when you're in the middle of it. That's what ODO is here for!

So when Gringo is ready for bed, toss a treat for Fannie and Pi to encourage them off the bed without you saying anything and see what happens over a few days or weeks.

Re: Pixel vs Chai-Kitty Training

Two steps forward, one step back. The dogs had been good about staying out of the basement in the new house. Then Havana heard Chai downstairs and chased her, which alerted Pixel. This happened twice (I foolishly thought after a good scolding the first time they'd get it.) The second time when I gra...

Re: Growly Guardy Pi

I agree with Sherri that Pi probably isn't resenting your time with Gringo. And I agree that he loses bed privileges as well. When I worked in doggie daycare we had a mini doxie who would climb on my lap and snark at the other dogs. So he'd lift a lip and I'd lift him to the ground. He finally learn...

Re: Don't bring your dog with you

Not "certified" but you can state "registered" since as far as I know, all of the therapy groups I know of require the dog and handler to pass a test and register with their group for insurance purposes. So I tell people Havana is a registered therapy dog.

Re: Pixel vs Chai-Kitty Training

We have another small success!!!!! I don't know if Chai is feeling brave since she hasn't been chased for awhile, or if she's really lonely, but she's been coming farther out of the girls' room more often. Last night I was bringing the dogs to bed and I always have them wait at the top of the stairs...

Re: Best Tie-Out Harness

I can't believe I forgot about the Sure Fit harness! Havana already has a couple, so I'd just need one for Pixel. Alissa - Pixel probably would, but when Havana was on leash restriction she decided she can't potty within 1/3 mile from the house. I'll only put one dog on a tie out at a time, because ...

Best Tie-Out Harness

My new house has many great features, but one thing it's currently lacking is a fence. I'm not sure when budget and weather will allow for a fence, so the dogs will have to be on a tie out to potty, at least at night when the kids are with me and I can't walk the dogs. I like their walking harnesses...

Re: Pituatary Dependent Cushing's

I'm glad you have answers, but sorry it's Cushings. Although I can't remember if I told you about my friend's cockapoo who had Cushings for at least 5 or 6 years. She was at least 14 and completely blind and mostly deaf by the time she died. And she lived up every minute. She was an excellent human ...

Re: Pixel vs Chai-Kitty Training

OMG! Chai came almost all the way to the DMZ! The kids were gone last night, so she didn't have her bed buddies, and breakfast was a bit later than usual, so she was extra hungry. She came halfway up the stairs bitching at me to hurry up her food before she DIED. I think part of the change is that s...

Re: Yellow Vomit

Huh. I thought I posted. The mystery may be solved! Havana horked up a size 13 child's sock this morning. I didn't know she was still eating them and I guess it's harder to expel them than toddler and baby socks. I'm now stapling socks to my children's feet. I don't know why they have to come off an...

Yellow Vomit

Havana has been one to puke up bile or foam from time to time, but never on a regular basis. The last couple of weeks or so she's been vomiting more frequently - approaching every day now. It had been going from a puddle about as big as a tea saucer or smaller to dinner plate diameter. So basically,...

Ok. That image of Kirby chewing on your book so casually cracks me up. How does he feel about cardboard? I'm wondering if you could give him chunks of really thick cardboard, like from extra sturdy boxes from Costco or somewhere. He can mouth it and taste is, but getting and ingesting pieces would t...

I'm just shaking my head in disbelief! Poor Zeke and poor you!!!!

Just had a thought - are you on any Ortho K9 forums? I know some are better than others at being supportive, but with any luck you'd find a good one and someone who's had a similar experience.

Re: Perfect Fit Harness?

Have you looked at the BrilliantK9 harnesses? They will definitely work with you to get the fit right. Havana's chest isn't as extreme as MP's, but it works well on her and the rehab vet liked it for her spinal issues. They also have a handle and some times I use that to get her out of the car.

Dehydrated/freeze dried raw samples

I'm debating doing dehydrated raw for Pixel. I used to feed THK all the time, but suddenly both Cousteau and Havana stopped eating it. (Can we talk about the bizarre experience of seeing Cousteau NOT eat food, even though he was totally healthy?!) I'd like to get some samples to see if rehydrating t...
