Re: Po's saga

Okay, you dog numbers nerds ( which I say with great affection). In one week on meds, his ALT value went from over 2600 to 800. Bilirubin down from 7.9 to .9!!!

No weight loss. And tonight he ate canned Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken and kibble from a bowl. Not my hands!!

Can I get a "Woot, woot!"

Re: Good, cost effective grain-free

I have fed Fromm in the past and wish either my cats or dogs liked it as well as Solid Gold kibble, but they don't. So everyone is doing grain free from Solid Gold here.

Re: Po's saga

Interesting, Nana. In the end, they barely used anesthetic - just for the few minutes it took to do the biopsy part on Thursday morning. Dr. T was actually pretty pleased at how well he handled the rather lengthy ultrasound on just the sedative (they have a 4th year vet resident shadowing the doctor...

Re: Po's saga

Jean, just saw your post! Yes, I am hand feeding - actually sort of forced him to eat canned food tonight again - I literally put it in his mouth and he eats it. Was not interested enough to just take it from my hand. And I have been trying different plates and bowls rather than his standard stainle...

Re: Po's saga

Woo hoo. Just found this in a Q&A on biliary sludge (human patient): Pale stools mean, not enough bile is coming into your intestine, so fats are not absorbed and are excreted. Green diarrhea, especially burning one, is quite characteristic for excess of bile excreting with the stool. Now, this mean...

Re: Po's saga

Poop report - walked the dogs and Pofi had a bm that was a bright green in the center - normal color surrounding. Honestly, looked like guacamole.... sorry. But true.

Wondering if this could be a sign he is passing that built up bile sludge?

Re: Po's saga

Nana, I was thinking about pan searing the boiled chicken in a pan with some chicken broth to see if that increases appeal. He did just eat a heated up Oscar Meyer "Natural" turkey sausage (hot dog). And begged for bits of my bagel. We love begging.

Re: Po's saga

This is no easy road, I tell you. He had more boiled chicken and treats during the day, but by dinner time he only ate some boiled chicken and some more treats - beef and chicken strips. All sourced and made in US. I just need stuff in his stomach to give him the meds for the gallbladder twice daily...

Re: Po's saga

Good info, Connie. The management protocol described is exactly what we are doing. The study stuff cited on management is awfully limited. Does make me pause. Especially knowing the rest of his organs look good - maybe we should consider surgery even if management seems to work. For longevity. The s...

Re: Po's saga

Yes, Jean - if he does not respond to management, we will go to surgery. He is 11 though, 11.5 and had two surgeries already this last year. Not thrilled at the prospect of a major surgery for organ removal. From what I had read so far, it is recommended for dogs up to middle age - he's not middle a...

Re: Po's saga

 U/S shows nothing of note with the liver - no growths, not large or abnormal in any way. But his gallbladder is another matter! Likely gallbladder mucocele. Going with injectable abx and other drugs including liver support drug that has milk thistle, SAM-e and something else in it. The inject...

Re: Po's saga

Yes, they probably could do the ultrasound without, but it would be challenging. And this way we can move right to biopsy if indicated.

Re: Po's saga

Thanks all for sympathy and encouraging words about the numbers. Nana, yes, he will do U/S first and only do biopsy if he thinks there is something that needs it and if he was happy with clotting numbers from tonight's blood test. But it is just our vet. Speed seemed paramount. Pofi will be under li...

Re: Po's saga

Back from vet where he acted like not a sick dog at all for Dr. S. Dr. P is on vacation this week and Dr. T who we saw on Thursday was on surgery today and had no openings till Friday. Dr. P did first surgery and Dr. T did second surgery, fyi. Bloods taken. Also Pancreatitis test, which seems reason...

Re: Po's saga

Thanks, Heather and Jean. Will share the blood test stuff. I did get vegetarian capsules I can put the slippery elm in, too. Today he had a lesser dose of the Probiotic and another Milk Thistle capsule. I definitely could see the leveling off on the mirtazapine with him - Saturday night he was bounc...

Re: Po's saga

Lisa T_II, he had only had one Rimadyl every other day and the last one was last Sunday morning. He had a lot more Rimadyl earlier this year with toe issues and surgeries. Never a problem. He had a few different abx, but I do think this was first time ever with Clavamox. Poops have seemed normal fir...

Re: Po's saga

Lynn - it is a growth that ruptured rather than a wound. Staph infection. I will ask about cold laser. So I found the probiotic capsules Nana mentioned and Milk Thistle capsules and bulk Slippery Elm. Had a probiotic and milk thistle with peanut butter. Had some chicken broth and I dissollved just a...

On my way to Seward Coop now. Thanks all. Appt tomorrow afternoon for bloodwork. He just grabbed a squeaky to and had me chase him upstairs to play. Just not acting like he feels poorly overall.

Re: Po's saga

Hi, Connie. 9 days of Clavamox, but last dosage was late Tuesday. There was an earlier course of abx - a different one. Mid November to mid Dec. Less effective. And many, many courses of antibiotics stretching back to beginning of May with start of toe issue and then amputation and second lump surge...

Po's saga

Need help, opinions on the latest chapter. After Christmas Day and day after when he was clearly having pain in the wrist of the let with toe amputation which also has the latest non cancer growth RIGHT at the wrist joint, we saw our vet and the lump was bigger and a bit oozy. Clearly painful. Aspir...
