Re: What are your best "real food" kibble toppers?

...Btw, sauerkraut is in the rotation, which she likes if she doesn't get it frequently. Just thought I'd mention that, since it's not often mentioned!

Re: What are your best "real food" kibble toppers?

Toppers for Jazz's meals include bone broth and for some reason she LOVES goat colostrum. I mix in different veggies on different days, and she seems to really like fresh ground flax. These top her homecooked foods, picky because of her IBD.

Re: Anal Glands

I can say that a lot of vets do not recognize early fistulas, so I hope that isn't what is going on. Can't say much without a picture, and it sounds like it might be hard to get a picture to capture what is going on. My experience is that Max's fistula oozed first, then it would start to bubble some...

Re: Behavior with chronic pain/discomfort

This sounds more like a medical issue than a training one, since the behaviour is medically induced. I'm not familiar with the type of neuro issues that you are dealing with, but I would look at how to help those flairs, and also betting that between the flairs there is low-level discomfort.

Re: Anal Glands

Okay on the fish oil - I know a few dogs whose anal glands are really irritated by fish oil for some reason. My experience is what judy has said... With Jazz here, it's a combination of diet and anatomy that causes her problems, two sides, one is much worse. With Max my fistula boy, the epsom salts ...

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

You might try googling about how to rebuild the bladder lining and strengthen it - I don't know why I was thinking hyaluronic acid might help, but I did find this: http://www.ic-network.com/forum/showthread.php?64733-Glucosamine-as-an-effective-treatment When jazz had constant pee issues, even after...

Re: Licorice Recurrent UTI

D-mannose is great, but rarely causes digestive upset, so watch for that if you start it. I would definitely try it. Has lyme/tbd been ruled out? They can suppress the immune system so it ultimately can't fight off anything. I this a senior dog then? Have you tried taking out sulfer based foods, lik...

Re: Nutrition and Behavior

There is the whole TCM thermal properties of food thing: http://thebodyinform.blogspot.com/2012/02/warming-and-cooling-foods-for-health.html Feed a dog that runs hot a food that is too warming, and they can be all over the place.... You need a good TCM practitioner to evaluate and work with the dog....

Re: Giardia

No experience with giardia. The weight loss and hunger would be consistent with a parasite that is inhibiting absorption of nutrients. I read once that MSM helps to fight giardia. No clue if that's true. The DE people might encourage DE. Sulphur like MSM in some dogs can cause urinary leakage. No cl...

Re: Medicated shampoo recommendations?

Oh, I used some of the Dechra wipes too when Jazz was bad and need frequent wiping - not very economical, but it allowed me to hit some stubborn spots that were dark and discolored more frequently.

I used the "blue label shampoo", but I guess they have a medicated zymox? I didn't look at the label though: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_13?url=search-alias%3Dpets&field-keywords=zymox+shampoo&sprefix=zymox+shampoo%2Cpets%2C279 http://www.amazon.com/Dechra-Miconahex-Triz-Shampoo-16-Ounc...

Re: Medicated shampoo recommendations?

I figured there would be all kinds of recommendations in here, guess I'll throw in my experiences... I like the zymox shampoo when I can get away with something that mild, but I did break down and buy jazz some dechra miconahex+triz shampoo, which I think worked well on her staph stuff. When mom was...

Re: co-enzyme q-10 for the oldies?

I like coQ 10 and have given it to all my dogs, not ure about the cognitive part, I haven't dealt with that in a dog yet. With jazz's IBD, she initially had oft tools on it, but that may have been more a muscular/coQ thing. I'm using the mercola stuff now that has a pump. Probably not the cheapest, ...

Re: Rabies question

There were some old studies that showed better protection with the boosters, than in the dogs w/o the 1 year booster. No clue if that was because the vaccines were different back then, or maybe, perhaps more likely, if a vaccine is given too young, before the immune system has matured, then the body...

Re: At my wits end... Gimpy Zeke now with stomach upset!

Lyme is not ruled out because there are species or borrelia and/or relapsing fever that thee test will not pick up. Depending on where the lyme is, it may not even be able to pick up "regular lyme", though that' a harder case to make. Lyme is NOT the only TBD that can caue these symptoms. Your vet d...
