Re: Heartguard or Interceptor?

Last time I saw interceptor, it was really the Plus, so make sure you are getting the regular Int. You can get the lower Int dose, the Safeheart dose, which only treats HW and not the other parasites.jazz's IMS said that HG is already at the lower dose. Interceptor came out at the higher dose as a m...

Re: A Max Update

Yeah, the doxy/nia is a powerful combination. Each time I've used it, I've always tapered off the niacin and stuck with. The doxy, though some dogs may need some extra niacinamide. I've had all my dogs on this mix for various immune system problems, you might play with the dosing down the road. Baki...

Re: MP having lots of seizures :(

I'm glad that she has been more stable, but wish they would stop completely. Yes, jazz's IMS had us check for Toxo as well as neospora, but there are so many tick disease that we don't have tests for :-( On the tick list, we've seen infection and symptoms sometimes with little changes in blood value...

Re: MP having lots of seizures :(

Oh no, I'm so very sorry :( I understand little about seizures, though jazz has had her episodes that we think were seizures. I will throw out a few random thoughts which are probably not helpful at all. Although it's usually really high liver values that do this, high liver values can contribute to...

Re: Hemopet results and eating cat poop

Btw, I fed my Indy pork and green beans for over a decade, though in the morning she had eggs and the green beans, so there is hope you can find a good diet and it will work for a long time. (I don't in general feed grains here.)

Re: Hemopet results and eating cat poop

I don't know the answer to that. I suspect that there can be a lot of overlap. I remember googling that question I think one time, and never getting the answer to exactly what I was looking for. I think you just have to combine the results with a food trial to get the best results. My previous dogs ...

Re: Thyroid and Lady

I would wait until after you work on the food sensitivities a bit. I don't recall ever looking up histamine and thyroid, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection. Also check your probiotics, some increase histamine, some don't.

Re: Thyroid and Lady

I was very unhappy with Dodds' interpretation of jazz's thyroid results. I love her lab because she has good panels, and has been much cheaper (haven't checked lately), but it seems that she has become much more conservative in her treatment recommendations over the years, as well as dosage. I'm 3 f...

Re: Hemopet results and eating cat poop

A bit of a picky point. Dodds' test does not test for allergens, but food sensitivies. We see the same symptoms from each, but they are a different type of immune response, and thus why you can test for sensitivies via saliva, but not for allergies. Sensitivities can change over time, I don't know h...

Re: Thyroid and Lady

14 is still on the low end of the scale, so her total T4 is low, and her free T4 is low end. To me that says that the thyroid isn't functioning well *for some reason*. I tend to be quick to treat a thyroid, just based on my own experience. But if you were treating a non-thyroid disease, like a tick ...

Re: Stomatitis- any experience?

Bartonella comes to mind. Incredibly hard to test for because there are all different kinds, though there may be a dominant form in cats? Steroids would not be indicated if this is infection.

Re: Lady severe allergy & need a good vet

Baking soda is soothing. For long term treatment, I wouldn't use benadryl, but would use zyrtec or something that is not as much of an acetylcholine inhibitor. There are food sensitivies and food allergies, two different tests. I used the Spectrum for the food allergies. Also, at least for allergies...

Re: Bilious vomiting syndrom

Tick disease often presents with low thyroid.

On the tick list, I've seen a number of dogs get ill from pepcid, with similar symptoms that it is supposed to fix, oddly enough. Same thing happens with my Jazz. Instead, I use baking soda with some water in a syringe.

This also confirms that abnormal liver function can cause problems with copper: http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/test-catalog/Clinical+and+Interpretive/8687 When Jazz was having liver problems (elevated enzymes), the internal medicine vet talked about how we treat and they get better, but then...

I"m sure you've googled the heck out of this, but it sounds like a side effect, not sure if it's an actual allergy: http://www.rxlist.com/neurontin-side-effects-drug-center.htm Something like Antronex (standard process) is supposed to help the liver process allergens. Increasing glutathione might he...

Re: Po's saga

I only skimmed the thread. My first suspicion actually would be the Rimadyl, but the abx certainly don't help. I've seen susceptible dogs near death after two days on Rimadyl. Now, lower dosages are used, but you still see dogs get really sick from it. So, yes, definitely agree with the liver suppor...

Any good behaviour recommendations in the book? It might just help people recognize what is going on, and that's important too.

I thought there was a thread here asking about it, but can't seem to find it. I just wanted to mention that the yahoo list DogRead this month has an author that has written a book on this. If it is IVDD, you might want to check out this site:
http://www.dodgerslist.com/

They are focused on Dachshunds because the breed is so predisposed, but it's a resource for all breeds, really.
Definitely a great resource, and people that can help address the medical side of this issue.
