I'm so glad she got that! So great that she was able to get him back so quickly this time.

Re: Getting dogs used to noises

Thanks! I just haven't had time to really dig into my books and think about this so now I have a plan. I grabbed a handful of treats when I went to use the sodastream today and when he heard it and ran to the kitchen to bark at it I just tossed them on the floor and that seemed to work. He's still h...

Getting dogs used to noises

So, my living situation will be changing and we'll be going from a house on nearly an acre to a townhouse. Kirby, adorable as he is, seems to be kind of overly alert and barks at weird noises (like the sodastream). There will be a lot more weird noises, I'm guessing. Any suggestions on things I can ...

Re: DHLPP initial series for adult dogs

Thank you!! I appreciate the advice. I was sharing what was up with my vet because they are normally not pushy about vaccines at all. We'll leave him at one. Now to do dental surgery to get that retained upper canine out....

DHLPP initial series for adult dogs

So, Kirby received a DHLPP vaccination at the rescue on June 3rd. He arrived at my house on July 8 and I brought him to my vet on the 20th for heartworm/fecal/exam. He's something around 3 years old, found as a stray, so no records exist from his previous life. My vet called me today and they want t...

Re: In Home Training...How Crazy Am I?

I kind of like Dogs and Families dog training. It's really simple but would be clear on your niche? Also, I'm stealing this idea from my friend's therapy business, but I love the word "connections" for family-bond improvement type stuff. So in case you need more branding ideas, there's another rando...

Re: Copperhead bites

I just texted the vet with the updated pic and asked about liver/kidney issues and she said they are really rare with copperheads, and she's only ever heard of them in dogs that had other systemic level reactions, which we didn't. Fraggle's behavior is good, though she now expects all the goodies wi...

Re: Copperhead bites

It looked pretty nasty still on Friday (open wound) and yesterday (heavy scabs), but today she licked off the scabs (bad dog!) And like magic it's 80% healed and growing fur where 2 days ago there was no epidermis. She's still got a bit of an off gait, but I don't know how much is just always been s...

Re: Copperhead bites

In good news, the sloughing is pretty much done (now just need to heal underneath). It didn't go really deep and is just the top skin layers that need to grow back.
Huge relief. The vet was very happy there were no tendons or anything visible....

Re: Copperhead bites

Lynn, I need to keep that in mind for the abx. Since yesterday she quit her meal 1/2 of the way through, and is given her the abx, that didn't help. Today I waited until she finished the meal but I'll try waiting some time after tomorrow. She went 12 hours between toperol doses today and pain levels...

Re: Copperhead bites

Oh, potato! Good idea. She used to do well on those back when we were home cooking. Fish too. I have some frozen cod I can cook, I think she likes it and she's getting tired of chicken. I've always eaten and used white rice to bind things up... She definitely does not need to gain weight. She's urpy...

Re: Copperhead bites

She has adjusted to the bandage, at least. She still gets freaked out when I bag it to go outside, but she's figured out how to begrudgingly pee and poop with it on. She's not happy about it and it takes a few squats before she can do it but she's managing. She's sleeping on my lap right now. she's ...

Re: Copperhead bites

She's doing okay again. It's all bandaged up and she hates the bandage but she's in less pain with it covered, especially since it won't randomly rip off more. Let's discuss the grossness and pain caused by a chunk of leg skin getting stuck to belly fuzz and ripped off. The 3 vets agreed it l...

Re: Copperhead bites

Fraggle is hiding her leg. I'm trying to take regular pictures so that I can monitor progression and make sure it looks better and not worse, but she won't show it to me. I can glance as she walks by, but if I bend over to look she sits on it. I got a decent look while she was busy eating, but she r...

Re: Copperhead bites

Ugh. Added antibiotics. I can't imagine how much pain she must be in to have air-snapped at the tech during her cold laser today. I mean, they don't even touch her leg. My vet is really amazing. I'm paying for the cold laser with the tech but the vet is also looking at her every laser appt with no c...

Re: Copperhead bites

Pain definitely seems better controlled this morning. phew. Swelling is also finally significantly down in the lower leg. I made her a new super cone but I accidentally made it too long so I need to adjust it while she sits in someones lap (so they can keep her from licking the wound). Right now it'...

Re: Copperhead bites

Ugh. More discoloration showed up on her belly and she's in noticable pain again, even on meds. Hopefully It's just a secondary infection and we can add in antibiotics and she'll be fine. Just as I was getting my hope up we were doing okay and improving.

Re: Copperhead bites

Good news, the top part of her leg is definitely a lighter purple and less swollen than yesterday. The swelling around the hock and lower leg section is still pretty bad though. Her clotting times were great, so I've added in the NSAIDS today since they will help with the swelling and it's safe to g...

Re: Copperhead bites

Oh, will ask about benadryl too when the vet calls tomorrow. Thanks for the idea! It still looks awful but she's eating well and even wagging her tail this evening. I think the main risk left is bad skin sloughing right where the bite was on her lower limb. It's just skin and bones right there so th...

Re: Copperhead bites

No antivenin. For copperheads the vet said unless the dog is having a major systemic reaction or has multiple bites they don't even suggest it. Apparently the risk of allergic reaction to the antivenin is more of a death risk than the standard level bites. I'm hoping the cold laser will reduce the t...
