Re: Guinness beer for heartworm?

I would file that under the same category as brewer's yeast and garlic "preventing" fleas.

It is claimed that a specific type of hops kills the worms, but considering the concentration and dosage, it doesn't make sense.

Re: Tail amputation

We had some tail issues with my Great Dane when he was young, but he eventually outgrew it at around 2 years old. It was not quite as bad as what you are describing with Zeke, but he had his tail bandaged a lot. We used a combo of quilted horse leg wrap, self-adhesive bandaging, and duct tape to wra...

YAY! Welcome back!

Did it just resolve on its own, or did you change anything on your device? We still don't know what's really causing all this and are impatiently waiting for a software fix.

Re: co-enzyme q-10 for the oldies?

CoQ10 it's usually very well tolerated. It's also good for the kidneys. :) If you want something specifically for cognitive function, look into propentofylline. In Germany it's sold under the brand name Karsivan, in English speaking countries (other than the US, sadly it's not available here) as Viv...

If you can, definitely go for the titer. $98.00 through Hemopet, but not sure if shipping cost would kill the deal for you.

Re: Rabies question

It's supposed to make the body's immune response faster than upon first exposure. I don't know how valid the theory still is, since the school of thought changed on the other vaccines too, as in vaccinate and then titer a year later rather than just revaccinate. Rabies is such a PITA due to all the ...

Re: Pixel vs Chai-Kitty Training

Yay for progress! And I've had the same experience, if you can stop the self-reward of chasing, the dog settles in and develops self control more quickly. When I brought home the orphaned kitten to my Ellie, I tied her to the radiator in the living room whenever I couldn't hold on to her leash in pe...

Re: Dr Dodds thyroid test

The nice thing with Dr. Dodds' test is that she takes all the dog's personal circumstances into consideration for interpretation - unlike typical labs. So I always tell my clients to submit a detailed history along with it, so she can get a full picture.

Re: Henry doesn't want to pee

The treat in my pocket distracted him so much that he couldn't/wouldn't leave my side to go pee ! I would shoo him away, and he would just come back and paw at me, or sit and look pointedly waiting for that treat. His brain just short circuits when there's food around. If you want to do some traini...

Re: Henry doesn't want to pee

THK says that it's ok to mix up several days worth of food at a time
Definitely. And you can also freeze re-hydrated portions if you like. Drop baggie/container into a hot water bath before going for a walk, and it'll be perfect for feeding by the time you get back.

Re: Pixel vs Chai-Kitty Training

Of course, Grandpa wasn't moving very fast, so it makes me think it is the movement more than the fact that the animal is a cat that gets Pixel going. Definitely. Dax is really good with the cats if they don't move, to the point of even going nose to nose and just sniffing a little. But if they get...

Re: Pixel vs Chai-Kitty Training

When Dax was still really crazy about the cats, I made lots of spaces for them where they could be high up, out of the way. And not just 5 or 6 foot high, but we are talking about a 3 pole cat tree with one platform a foot or so from the ceiling. I don't know how mobile Chai is, buy my two boys (now...

Re: Polycystic kidney disease & liver trouble

I'm so sorry, Tatyana :( The things I can think of in regards to diet are keep it low in phosphorus and pro-inflammatory factors (e.g. omega 6) and low in fat overall. Use lean, white meat (e.g. white ocean fish, chicken/turkey breast, lean parts of rabbit etc.) or dairy protein to decrease formatio...

Re: Allergies

if benadryl isn't helping, I might think that it's something with the diet
No, not necessarily. Antihistamines are really only 33% effective in dogs with atopy. Also, different products may or may not be helpful, so if benadry doesn't help, it's worth a try to see if other products do.
