Re: Easy Walker or Gentle Leader

Oh, I just did a search and found some posts. I was looking at both brands of the harness - not the head harness. Just wondering which brand is best though. And then I saw someone mentioned the Sensation brand. They all look pretty much the same in the pictures. However the Sensation is considerably...

Easy Walker or Gentle Leader

I am still struggling with Pistol pulling on the leash when we go out which I know is not good for his leg. I think the better he feels the more he wants to "GO" full speed. I was wondering about trying either the Easy Walker or the Gentle Leader harness. Has anyone had any experience with either? I...

Re: Pappy, SIT

Just an update - Pappy now sits IMMEDIATELY at both gates for me. Sometimes I don't even have to ask for a sit - we just arrive at the gate and he sits. :)

Re: Dognapping in Michigan

I don't know what to think without knowing for sure just how bad things were for the dog. It made me think of the Rottie that was tied up outside a house where we walked everyday. He was on about a 10 ft rope. He had a dog house and I think they kept his food and water full, but they gave that dog N...

Re: quick! extra ingredients in melatonin pills?

That was so interesting to me. Pappy is so horribly fearful when we travel. Shakes and pants the whole trip. Diazapam doesn't even help - but maybe melatonin will? I'm going to try it for our next trip. And of course storms and fireworks freak him out too. I dread the 4th of July. I wish I had a bas...

Re: How long to wait before repeating a command?

Judy, I would love to be able to say: "most of the time they do respond promptly to the basics: sit, lay down, roll over, stay, come, and mostly walk well on a leash, and are pretty easy to live with". Mine are lacking in most all of those areas. :( How's about you come over and work on mine. :)

Re: How long to wait before repeating a command?

Actually, I have to confess, I gave the sit command (or cue :) ) twice. Once at the beginning of the 2 minutes that wasn't on the video and then another time after I started the video. But I have no doubt he heard me and knew what I wanted with the first cue. He just didn't want to comply. Pistol al...

Pappy, SIT

We went for our walk this morning. Unlike yesterday, it was fairly uneventful. When we got back to the main gate, I decided not to just open it and let Pappy run through it, but rather to make him sit. I told him to sit and then waited at least a full 2 minutes before I started videoing. The video i...

Re: Great! Another dog I can't trust

Jean, yes this behavior just started when I put Pistol in the stroller. Pappy has always been my "I love everybody dog". So it is either one of the two - protecting Pistol or fearful because he doesn't have Pistol down on his level. Or a third possibility - just taking over Pistol's duties for him b...

Re: Great! Another dog I can't trust

Ok, I have done that before. Just folded my arms and waited for the sit. It works well, especially when we are at the back door ready to go out for a walk. They are jumping around like, to use your term, "hooligans". :) I can fold my arms and wait and they will not only sit but lay down, because the...

Re: Great! Another dog I can't trust

So Connie, if Pappy doesn't offer a sit when I step into his space, should I force a sit at that point. Although, I think he will if I move him over soon enough before he get amped up. I will be anxious to try this once Pistol is out of the stroller again. He usually starts the barking lunging thing...

Re: Great! Another dog I can't trust

Thanks guys. I will take your advice. I did pull them over to the side the next 2 times the men came by, but I didn't ask Pappy to sit. I just held the leash while he lunged. :) Connie, you are right - my dogs don't deal well with stress. And Judy I think you hit the nail on the head - I really thin...

Great! Another dog I can't trust

I can't believe what just happened. I took the dogs for their walk (Pistol in stroller). There are 2 men who walk together over there everry morning. They were coming towards us. I normally just peel out into the grass and make a loop around them. However, I thought, well Pistol is strapped into the...

Re: Brace

Well, I messed with the brace a while longer and finally think we are on the right track. Tightened it in places - loosened it in other places. He's walking pretty much normally in it now. He was walking on all 4's before but with a very heavy limp. Now I can barely notice the limp. I am feeling muc...

It does fit better, but I still am struggling to know if I have it adjusted right. It seems like every time he sits down and gets up it c...

Re: Brace

Yes it got here today. The jury is still out. We spent an hour figuring it out and getting it on him for the first time. Not a success right off the bat. He was holding the leg almost straight out to the side. I finally figured out that it was twisted a little to the outside instead of pointing forw...

He really was happy. He seemed so relaxed and happy up there. It reminded me of the time we rented a boat and took them out - he "smiled" the whole time. That's how he was. I was so pleased that he likes it.

Pistol's New Ride

I found a stroller for Pistol yesterday at Pet Sense. It was $20 off because of a missing velcro strip. :) We tried it out this morning and I couldn't believe how well he accepted it. We stopped 3 different times and let him sniff around under shade trees, but each time he was more than happy to get...

Re: Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

The links would be great Heather- but don't go to a lot of trouble. He actually is getting to where he stops and looks at me when he wants up on the couch, because I have told him to "wait" so many times. Same way with go up and down the steps outside. He knows now that I am going to carry him up an...

Re: Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

Mary, I guess I have no idea right now what I am doing. I think I'm just going to coast a little bit - give him a few more days. I really don't want the joint messed with anymore. I feel like it has improved a little and any more manipulation will just disturb that. He saw 3 different vets last week...

Re: Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

Yea, that's a lot of "ifs" isn't it. I really just feel that the brace would give us an extra layer of protection for when the "oops" moments happen. But some say it doesn't allow proper movement of the joint or whatever or it puts pressure on the back, hip, etc. or the scar tissue won't buildup as ...
