Re: I am just sick. :(

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have been doing some clicker training with the dogs since this happened and implementing NILIF to some extent. No door or gate opens for them without a sit and they must sit before their food is put down. I hope you all don't think we have just never done anyth...

Re: Should I be encouraged?

Thanks for checking Claire. He's doing ok I guess. He went back to lifting the leg while eating his meals though. But he uses the leg really well, even at night when I take the brace off for bed, he walks well on all 4's. Just still lifts it when standing still and when he tries to trot. He hates th...

You need to post some pics of Griffin and Skylar. I've seen pics of Ben, but not the other two. They sound adorable. :) And I love princess Lollypop Rainbow. :)

Yippee! I did some digging and came up with my old clicker. Hopefully Pappy will like it better.

Great - the clicker sounds like a firecracker.....

So I bought a new clicker at PetSense today and started working with the dogs. We've clicker trained before and they always liked it so I was really puzzled when Pappy started just backing away from me and ducking his head. He sat, I clicked and then offered the yummy treat and he wouldn't even take...

Re: I am just sick. :(

Heather, I have read most of it. It can be a bit overwhelming when you just sit and read it through. A lot of it doesn't apply. She is talking a lot about a dog who bites its owners or others in the household. That is totally not Pistol. His biting has always been situations where someone just sudde...

Re: I am just sick. :(

Heather would you believe I have the book on my Kindle for PC. I had already decided I am either finding my missing clicker or buying another one and doing some clicker training. When I was at the store earlier I bought some round steak which I plan to cook and cut into tiny pieces for treats. I am ...

Re: I am just sick. :(

Emily, thank you. I'm not sure I could afford a behaviorist though, even if there were someone close. The closest towns to me are Blackwell and Ponca City - both Oklahoma of course. Neither are very large towns, so I can't imagine there would be anyone in either of them, but I guess its possible. Bu...

Re: I am just sick. :(

Connie, no not in the immediate area for sure. We are an hour and a half from Oklahoma City, which would probably be the closest. Some days I really wonder why I have dogs. Dealing with his acl trying to heal - then the 4th of July and all the subsequent prolbems. Then he had a grass awn in his othe...

Re: I am just sick. :(

No, I'm not. Like I say it only happens if someone strange he doesn't know comes in unexpectedly. If its someone who is actually coming to visit (as opposed to a repairman), we pen him up and then after they have been here a little while and he knows we are ok with them, then we let him out and he i...

I am just sick. :(

Our washing machine went out and we had a new one delivered today. The delivery guy called and said he would be here around 2:30. I got the baby gate out with the intention of penning the dogs in the kitchen. I was waiting for the doorbell to ring and the dh was to go to the door and direct them aro...

I sure hope this passes.....

Ever since the 4th of July Pistol has been on high alert - jumping at every sound from outdoors. Yesterday evening we were in the yard someone was bouncing a basketball on the court at the park. I guess it sounded sort of like a firecracker. That got him started - then there actually WERE some firec...

Re: A fun and successful 4th of July

That is so awesome! That's probably the best part of getting a new puppy after you have time to learn a lot in the past. You get to take that puppy like a clean slate and apply all the things you have learned in the past with other dogs. I wish I could go back and do everything right with my boys fr...

There are dog people and then there are dog people

I have a friend who has a Yorkie - I think he is about 9 months old and also a couple of big dogs in her backyard. We talked the other day about how we would handle the fireworks. She just live a block from me so the fireworks were just as loud at her house as mine. She said they would be home and w...

Re: Where will you be this 4th of July?

Our night was horrible. We used Drama Trauma, Rescue Remedy, loud tv and a fan going with quilts over the window. Surpisingly Pappy wasn't too bad, but Pistol was a basket case. We went to bed after the city display was over, but they were still very nervous and not settling. Finally about the time ...

This is another reason I don't like the 4th of July. We buried our sweet Sam on this day 3 yrs ago at the tender age of 3. :(

Re: Where will you be this 4th of July?

Not sure yet, but it sure won't be in the den where we usually hang out. You can see the park from the windows on the back wall of the den and they are floor to ceiling windows. There is only one house between us and the park where the city display is shot off. I use to think that was great because ...

Re: Should I be encouraged?

I know you are right Connie. In fact he and/or Pappy has pulled the brace off twice. Both times I have caught Pappy with one of the velcroe strips in his mouth only to look over and see the brace on the floor. I know he wants it off - he sometimes bites at it now - which he was not doing at first. B...

Re: Should I be encouraged?

They told me on the CM board the it definitely IS a good sign! :) I can tell he feels like the leg is more stable. He is wanting to do more. I know that now is when I really have to keep my guard up and not let him overdo. We are still wearing the brace, although he pretty much hates it. He is actua...

Should I be encouraged?

I asked this question on the CM Yahoo group, but I will ask you guys too. Tonight while Pistol was eating supper, for the first time since he got hurt he stood on all 4 legs to eat. He has been walking on all 4's for a while now (although with a limp), but only lifting the leg if he tries to trot. H...
