He's Home

He's home and doing ok. He is content in his pen for now. I'm sure that will change but now he just wants left alone. Of course Pappy is hating this already - wants brother to play, but I guess he will adjust. He drank a bunch of water right off, probably more than I should have let him have but it ...

Re: Should I call?

Ok, they just called back and he is out of surgery. She said it went fine and then said there was a lot of scar tissue that Dr. had to scrap out of there, but he got it all cleaned up and repaired. I had to wonder though - isn't scar tissue what we want? But I suppose he had to have it cleaned out t...

Re: Should I call?

Thanks Robin and everyone for all good thoughts. Not sure everyone saw where they called at about 12:55. The drawer test was positive - it is definitely torn and they were going in for surgery then. He said 1-2 hrs depending on how things go. So he just sat in his pen unsedated for 2 1/2 hrs. I hate...

Re: Should I call?

I couldn't stand it. I called - she said Dr. is on his way in to sedate him right now and they will be calling shortly. Shish! Ok, they just called back - it is definitely torn and he is in surgery now. Said it will be anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on how smoothly it goes. At least now I know he...

Should I call?

This is killing me. Its been 2 1/2 hrs. They were suppose to call as soon as they sedated him and did the drawer test to let me know if they are going ahead with surgery. Still no phone call. I know they had some other surgeries, but the girl at the front indicated that they would be starting on Pis...

Re: Pistol's Surgery

Thanks everyone - the encouragement is much appreciated. Sabine, I hear you about trying to watch the calories. Problem about frozen kongs is, neither of my dogs have ever been interested in Kongs. BUT the only thing I ever put in them was dry kibble or dry treats. But they just got really frustrate...

Pistol's Surgery

Well, I know this is not the decision most of you would have made, but we have decided to go ahead with the Traditional ACL surgery for Pistol. He goes in tomorrow morning at 9:00. We have been trying for 9 wks to do CM (conservative management) with him. It seems to be 2 steps forward and 3 steps b...

Re: Tell me about your favorite cooling beds/mats

My dogs have this one: http://www.beyondbeds.com/cool-bed-iii-dog-cooling-bed-cool-bed-iii-covers.aspx?pmc=CoolIII&gclid=CNzr8MGywLECFWROTAod8WgAnA They love them. They are in their crates. I use to only have one and they fought over who slept in that crate at night, so I put one in the other one. O...

Re: Where do your dogs sleep?

See - my dogs do that. One in front of my legs and the other in back - but they are above the covers - therefore I am trapped. I can't move and heaven forbid I should need to turn over. I think I would actually prefer they be under the covers so I wouldn't be pinned down. :) I ordered the new wire c...

Re: Where do your dogs sleep?

Thanks all. You have made some excellent points. Speaking of a "Bruhaha". That was part of the problem last night. They had both been on the bed. Then Pistol got back in one of the crates. Later Pappy walked past it and poked his head in. Pistol exploded - didn't bite him but definitely went off on ...

Re: Where do your dogs sleep?

Lynn, I've never used the pans in the bottom of the crates. Years ago when we had "tried" to crate train our poodle in a wire crate, I took the tray out and just put a padded cushion in its place. I'm sure that is what I will do if I buy wire crates again. Right now they are both sleeping on "cool b...

Re: Crate Training

They absolutely don't have an aversion to their crates. Some nights they spend a good deal of time in them and other nights not. But when I am having a bad night anyway, which I do sometimes and they are also restless, it can be a very long night. Those are the nights I would love to be able to put ...

Re: Where do your dogs sleep?

Hmmmm, well it sounds like very few dogs who are not puppies are required to sleep in crates which kind of makes me second guess myself. However, as someone noted, it would just be good for them to be "ok" in a crate with the door closed so that they could be there when necessary. I'm thinking if I ...

Where do your dogs sleep?

I hate to be a "thread hog" here. I already have another thread going about crate training at night. Just wondering though where does everyone's dogs sleep. Your bed, a crate, their own bed, the sofa?

Crate Training

I have probably mentioned before that our dogs sleep in open crates on a table next to our bed - meaning they are free to go from their crate to our bed during the night. Some nights are fine. Other nights - like last night are awful. They were back and forth and all over the bed. I can't close the ...

Re: Leash Walking Success Story

Ashley, I haven't actually bought a flirt pole, but I tried making one. Just tied a toy to a short plastic pole I had. It seemed to just frustrate him more than anything. Then when he did get a hold of it, he jerked it so hard he broke the "heavy duty" string it was tied with. Then he spent a few mi...

Re: Leash Walking Success Story

I haven't tried any puzzle toys but almost bought one at Petsense recently. I think I will get it next time I'm there. It was only $20.00, which compared to some of them isn't that bad. He does have an egg that you have to roll around to get food/treats out of, but he gets it out too fast so that do...

Leash Walking Success Story

Pappy has always been really bad about pulling hard on the leash. You would think, at 16 lbs that wouldn't be such a big deal, but it certainly keeps a walk from being relaxing for me. I have been working with him only for a few days and I am amazed how quickly he has learned. When he gets to the en...

Oh my! So good you checked them out first. Sadly, I had to give up my groomer I had been using for about a year. She did an excellent job and was very reasonable. I also like that she did boarding and lived actually IN the same building - her apt being right behind the back wall of the kennel/boardi...
