Re: Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

Claire, thanks! I think I am finally 100% convinced that Pistol does not need surgery and that this guy is totally dishonest. His right leg is the injured leg so he has been lifting it to pee. This afternoon, he actually lifted the left leg and supported himself with the right. I was so surprised. B...

Re: What length bully sticks do you get?

I get the 12 in and DH cuts them in half. They last about like Sherri said, 3 20 minute sessions. I do like to get the wavy ones that are pretty thick. One thing I insist on is "oderless". The Bravo's are usually odorless. I've gotten others that claimed to be but they were not. We left on a trip on...

Re: Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

I really think I want to try the brace - or a brace of some kind. They were saying on the Yahoo CM board that the filament that is used for this surgery is only temporary - that after 8 wks or so, it stretches out and at that point it is the scar tissue that is holding the joint. That is exactly wha...

Re: Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

Darn! Does this ever happen to you all. I typed a reply here, fairly lengthy - then before I posted I went over to mraleigh's profile to get her first name. I just feel weird addressing someone by their screen-name. :) Anyway, I came back over here and "poof" my reply was gone. Gah! Anyway, ty you a...

Re: Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

Thanks all for input. Sherri, he is planning on doing the drawer test under sedation. Judy, that is a good idea, to ask for the xray if I have them sedate him to do the drawer test. I told him I needed an xray for the brace - but he was so dead set against the brace, I don't even think he heard me. ...

Pistol - Home from Vet/Surgeon

Well, we are home and I still have no idea what we are going to do. He tried to do the drawer test on him. He said he got some movement, but because he was so tense, he couldn't give me a 100% diagnosis, but he is of the opinion it is at least a partial tear. Then of course he told me everything you...

Re: This is what breaks my heart

I'm thinking of trying some puzzle toys. Although Pappy is more likely to play with them than Pistol. He shys away from anything that makes a lot of movement or noise. But if nothing else it will give Pappy something to do while Pistol can't play with him.

This is what breaks my heart

We came in from our potty break this evening and Pistol immediately grabbed a toy and brought it to me to play. Pappy grabbed the other end of the toy and a game of tug was about to ensue. Of course, I had to stop them. :( The thought of him not being able to play for months is about more than I can...

Re: Sad night for my friend

Oh that is so heart-breaking. But it sounds like, even if the funds were available for surgery, the outcome may have not been good. It must be so hard with kids too. My DH and I had a hard enough time dealing with the heartbreak of having to put our last 2 pets down, much less, having to deal with t...

Re: I thought he was beter but....

Thank you so much Claire. The brace WoundWear is offering now is called Dynamic AtraC. It is around $300. I am really so considering it. I just feel like it would give us one more layer of protection, whether or not we do the surgery - because I guess you can use them before and after the surgery? "...

Re: Leg Brace

Thanks Sherri, that was really helpful. I'm definitely going to look further into the brace. I am still confused about just how it works, but I'm going to go the the website that sells them and check them out.

Leg Brace

What about a brace for Pistol's knee. Has anyone had experience with them? Do they just use those after surgery or for CM to prevent surgery?

Re: I thought he was beter but....

I definitely won't do anything to hasten it. Trying really hard to keep him restricted. But I just keep thinking everyday I will see some improvement and then another day goes by. Actually he is putting the foot down intermittenly when he is walking slowing. When I have him in the yard, if I give hi...

Re: I thought he was beter but....

Thanks Mraleigh, that is encouraging to know your dog was doing that well that early on. I just had someone on the CM Yahoo group give me some similar words of encouragment. I am starting to think surgery might actually be faster - in terms of stabilizing the joint intitially so that I'm not scared ...

Re: I thought he was beter but....

That all makes sense Judy. So would everything you just said apply to CM as well - as in 6 wks before light walking? You said you interpret "light walking" as potty breaks, but potty breaks is what he is getting now. How would that be different? I'm sorry. I know I just need to get him over the Anim...

Re: I thought he was beter but....

It sure seems like you get a lot of different information on different sites. Several things I've read suggest that an x-ray does show a torn ACL. And other things say it will not show it. No, neither of the vets I went to suggested an xray would be the next step. My local vet here just said if it w...

Re: I thought he was beter but....

I was looking back through my old posts (well not that old). Anyway, Pistol's last injury to this leg was the end of March, then April 24, there is a post called "Always something". Pappy had hurt his leg at that point. It made me so sad looking back at this post. Sabine suggested the x-pens for the...

Re: I thought he was beter but....

Mraleigh01, how much did you dog weigh when he was injured? Is he a big dog? From what I've read smaller dogs are more likely to heal without surgery. I'm grasping at straws here.

Re: I thought he was beter but....

Yesterday evening he began putting the foot down just intermitently. But is still mostly carrying it. Does anyone know what the surgery costs if we have to go that route? I know it will vary depending on who does it, but what is the range? I sure hope I'm asking this needlessly. :(

Re: I thought he was beter but....

Yea, that's what we are doing. He hasn't been for a walk since it happened on Thursday. I was taking him out to pee without a leash because he carries the leg and wasn't trying to do any running, but as of today I have been taking him on leash only. He has had this happen before, but always before h...

Re: I thought he was better but....

At this point he is carrying the leg almost exclusively. (Even still this morning) If he puts it down at all it is when he is standing at his food bowl. Then it is barely touching the floor. It happened Thurs. afternoon. By yesterday morning he was beginning to put it down a little when he walked, b...
