Re: ODO FB group?

I was picturing it more as a group to share photos of our dogs and just sort of chat, and to keep the forum for serious health stuff. I'd still like to have a group on FB just for our circles, but to keep the discussion casual. I'd share more photos on ODO, but its kind of a pain (I'm being super ho...

Re: What season is your dog's least favorite?

Perry was not a fan of winter. Or early spring, or late fall. Or cold, or rain, or ice, or snow, or wind. You guys remember his full winter gear for maximum weather protection. He tolerated high heat super well, though. Debbie doesn't seem to dislike anything. Rain makes smells smellier, snow is fun...

Goodbye to Perry

Most of you saw it on fb, but I'll put it here as well. On Wednesday, we said good bye to Perry. He had a difficult week and then suddenly got really bad. The pain became too much for him to handle. I realized that there was just nothing we could do for him anymore and we had to make the difficult d...

Re: Polycystic kidney disease & liver trouble

He ate dinner today, yay! Nausea is a whole different subject with this dog. Pretty much throughout his life he's vomited bile at least once a week. I've discussed this here, with vets, and there really have been a solution. I've just accepted it. When we switched to raw for a while it went down to ...

Re: Polycystic kidney disease & liver trouble

Thank you all, for your thoughts. Yesterday we really had to convince him to eat anything. I'm thinking his liver is really pressing against his stomach because he wants to eat but then turns away. He's also getting super picky. He suddenly doesn't like tripe anymore and was turning his nose at fres...

Polycystic kidney disease & liver trouble

So it's been a while since I posted much, but I'm really at a loss here. We've got some bad news on Perry. Long story short, ultrasound showed that he has polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and an enlarged liver probably due to a large tumor. Fasting blood work was surprisingly good, so his organs are...

Re: home remedy for hot spot?

Calendula tincture, if you can find it. Perry recently developed a few minor hot spots (the dachsund was in season and he was all frustrated). Calendula helped quite a bit! I also added some betamethasome ointment (which is steroid-based, but works wonders). Cleared everything up in two days.

Re: Possibly spoiled green tripe?

I mostly lurk ;) I've decided that its rotten. Its all frozen and now my freezer smells. Not that normal "poo-like" smell that tripe usually has, just smells like rotten meat. So I'm tossing the whole batch. And filling the freezer with lots of baking soda. Yuck :( Shame that so much will go to wast...

Possibly spoiled green tripe?

I normally cut up green tripe partially frozen. This time I bought a whole big bag of frozen tripe and it wound up sitting out for two days before I got a chance to cut it. It smelled worse than usual, but I don't know if its because it was room temperature (no room in the fridge for 10 lbs of tripe...

Re: Training in another language

Just keep in mind that sometimes commands in another language might be harder on you than on the dog. In the sense that if something is happening quickly, you need to send your dog a message *right now* it needs to be something you can blurt out without fumbling through different terms in your head....

Re: Training in another language

My redhead is mostly bilingual. He has some commands in english, some in russian - most he understands in both. I didn't specifically train him in either language, he's picked it up because I tend to switch a lot at semi-random when I talk to him. He also tends to understand different people with th...

Re: Pork?

I'm going to bump up this thread because pork interests me quite a bit. I'm in Ukraine now with Perry and, well, this is pork country. Its the most widely-available meat source, and is generally less expensive than beef. I recall hearing that raw pork should not be fed because it can contain some pr...

Re: Shaving a lab question

I mean yes it might ruin the coats for a long time if not permanently, but if you keep shaving them after having done it once, will it really matter? As a pet owner I'm not a fan of shaving down labs because i hate the way it looks. As a groomer - shave them all down!!! - the drying/brushing process...

Re: Throwing up bile because of stress?

Yes, stress can definitely cause that. Per gets that sometimes... well he used to more, when he was younger. But also even though she doesn't really care for food, she was more active than usual since she's hanging out with the other dog and actually got more hungry than usual. Hence bile around the...

Milk!

The topic came up on another forum - to give milk or not to give milk? Some people were saying never ever... I give the boys milk-semi regularly. They enjoy it, its a good way to get them to drink more, and they don't have tummy issues afterwards. So i see no reason not to. I don't expect any benefi...

Re: Siberian Husky's Coat Has Rust Tinges

By any chance have you bathed the dog in baby shampoo? Because that will strip color right out of the coat (in fact i remember a user here a long while back who had this problem with a german shepherd - the black in his coat got bleached). Its a misconception that baby shampoo is gentle, in fact my ...

I was thinking about garlic, too. I know Becca has had success with garlic as flea prevention.

Musher's paw wax also says it will repel flies if its put on ears and such.
