Re: Gabapentin guidance

Nutmeg is on gabapentin (100 mg twice a day) and it really does make a difference - by which I mean, when she WASN'T on it, she was markedly worse, but it's hard to tell when she IS on it, because it's quite subtle ... if that makes sense? She takes it for mysterious pain/nerve damage/who knows what...

Re: Not sure what to do - ailing best friend

I'm so sorry to read this, especially so late. It's so hard to see them decline like this, and I'm dreading the decisions I know I will have to make in the (near?) future with my guys. I'm sure you have Caesar's best interests at heart, and you are clearly very perceptive of his behaviour and moods....

Re: Old dog, two story house

How steep and wide are the five stairs? Would it be possible to build ramps for her to use? We always joke about getting a stairlift for Becky  She's still pretty spry and we have like 13 stairs to get to the main living area of our house. She takes her time and seems okay. She pulled a muscle ...

Re: Acupuncture expectations

Gabapentin can help with pain (esp. if used as adjunct w/NSAIDs) but also contributes to grogginess a bit, so it can sometimes seem like they're actually more wobbly/less active in some cases—which sure can make it difficult to tell if their mobility is improving or not. :) Have you tried traction ...

Re: Acupuncture expectations

I saw Benson's video on FB, and I can see that he just doesn't seem right, especially right after getting up. Poor little guy :( Just going to chime in on laser treatment! Nutmeg got laser treatments as part of her TPLO "package" last year, and I really think it helped her heal up well. Her TPLO leg...

Re: Why do I hate trialing my dogs so much?

I wouldn't say I hate trialing, but I've come to find it so draining on my time... and I'm just not a competitive person. Nutmeg has retired from agility, but Spratty and I still do a weekly class, which we both really enjoy. Once in a while I'll enter a fun match or trial, but I just find it eats u...

Re: Recurring diarrhea

You can also try oatmeal in place of rice. I find it firms things up a bit better. Can you get a hold of "Acute Care" - we call it butt paste at our house. It comes in a massive syringe and can be added to food. That, in combination with metro, seems to work pretty well. I made a "tummy mix" by blen...

Oh Jen, I've been so sad all day since seeing the news on fb. I haven't been on ODO in far too long, but I wanted to log in and send my condolences. I had such fun with you and Roscoe those two times, and he was such a lovely, good boy. I know you'll hold your memories close to your heart.

Re: Cost of medications

I am very excited to try this for the first time today! Becky has to have some work done on her gums (she is a little defective and thus expensive) and the vet is going to write me a scrip for the pain meds so I can buy it from my local Shoppers Drugmart!

Re: Cost of medications

Wait. WUT. I *never* thought about calling in an Rx to a pharmacy! Is it normal for pharmacies to carry veterinary meds?

I love my vet, but they are very pricey! And, since I'm putting their kids through university anyway, maybe I should try this...

Mind: blown :P

I bought a house for my dogs. They have their own suite downstairs. Fiance and I frequently worry that we *are about to run out of treats* so the house is stocked to the brim with at least two massive bags of Charlie Bears... just in case  And we HAVE to bring the crew to the pet sho...

Meet Becky!

So... we're now a household of three hounds! We're technically fostering Becky until next week, when she goes back to the shelter for a vet check. After that, assuming everything is okay, she's ours :D She is such a sweetie. She's pretty mellow, but LOVES going outside. There have been a few struggl...

Amanda, her leg is a little shonky, but she walks with no problems on it. It's just... penguinny? I guess? She is actually quite leggy for a Bass...

That's amazing, Katie! :) I only ever see labs here as guide dogs, but I know that GSDs and dobes were also at one time used. You should be rightfully proud of your and your dogs' contributions :D

That's wonderful news! Are these specific types of guide dogs (for blind people)? I've never seen or heard of collies for this role, but I think they would be a great choice provided the temperament is just right :)
