I've had a few field spaniels from a local breeder in class. They were all lovely dogs

Recurring diarrhea

In addition to the whole esophageal stricture thing, Havana has been dealing with intermittent diarrhea. I think it started just before her dental on February 19. She was barely eating anything after that so I don't know if she cleared up or just wasn't eating enough. She had a few overnight diarrhe...

Re: Hand Stripping

Border terriers are so stinking cute! Can you wash her in a mix of warm water and baking soda, followed by an ACV rinse? I've done that with Havana when she was doing a lot of therapy visits.

Re: Flying with Puppy

I flew my collie from Florida to Wisconsin and Danish Swedish Farmdog from Denmark to Wisconsin. I wouldn't say it was the highlight of my life, but I would do it again if necessary. With the Farmdog I think I flew from Copenhagen to Amsterdam, then to Chicago, and finally to Madison. The airports ...

Shit. Shitty shit shit. I can't imagine a world without a NanaMaisyPancakes amalgamation, but I can say I'm glad I knew a world where one existed, even if it's never long enough. You two have had a wonderful journey together and while it will look different, you'll always be together. ODO vibes for ...

Nature's Domain Grain Free?

Anyone know anything good or bad about this? We're currently feeding Fromm and it's going well, but if I can get similar good results from Nature's Domain (sold at Costco) for half the price, I'd be all for it. One of my New Year's goals is to make stew to top any dry food the dogs get, using whole ...

Re: Thyroid testing?

Is he around 3 years old now? That seems to be kind of a magical age for dogs to have behavior changes one way or the other. Maybe go back and treat all introductions like you're socializing a puppy again. Treats from you for polite behavior, keep an eye on him for the first 5-10 minutes, or ask peo...

Re: Nerve Sheath Tumor

Lisa Marie, I am so sorry. The experience I have with a nerve sheath tumor is in a human child (in his cervical spine) and that surgery to remove it was difficult and ineffective. This is the question people asked me when I was looking at an MRI for Havana's spinal issue - would knowing with an MRI ...

Glad to hear everyone's normal-adult-good-puppy stories. I've spent some more time with the puppy and there is puppy behavior coming out more and more. Not super naughty, but enough. :-)

Re: dog cosmetic dentistry?

GSDs have to have all of their teeth as part of the breed standard, so that's one I can think of. Incorrect bite, over or under, or a mild scissors bite can all cause problems in conformation dogs but aren't necessarily going to affect quality of life.

I'm so sorry. I hope it doesn't sound callous, but better he was freed from his pain with people in rescue than to die slowly with the in-laws. I'm terribly sorry it happened, but it was ultimately better. Best of luck to Doodles. Your did the best you could, and it is good, under bad circumstances.

Re: Do all breeds belong in "All Breed" rescue?

Connie, I agree that helping the animals trumps egos. But I've got so much stupid drama in my life right now, I just can't see adding more. And the local humane society is as bad, if not worse, than a lot of rescue egos. I'm doing what I can with the local guide-dog organization and would love to wo...

Is this puppy TOO good?

I'll start out by saying 1) Cousteau was such an awful puppy that I'm just now, 17 years later, thinking maybe all puppies aren't evil incarnate and 2) I had very few border collie puppies in my puppy classes. Typically the ones we had only got into class because there was something wrong and the hu...

Re: barking to go out when they don't need to go out.

I had to do the same thing with Cousteau. It hurt to do it - it seemed so wrong - but between young kids and my ex who didn't want his precious sleep interrupted for any reason, I had to. And he was good with it. He'd put himself to bed and would sometimes be annoyed if we were watching TV in the de...

Re: Do all breeds belong in "All Breed" rescue?

As I'm reading these comments I think what left a bad taste in my mouth is this particular rescue. I haven't worked with a lot of all breed rescues, not sure why. But this one is run by someone who lets others foster and do home visits, but she is the final say in placements. Even over the foster ho...

Re: Do all breeds belong in "All Breed" rescue?

I can definitely see that, Sherri. People who never thought of a breed or wouldn't normally be considered can be great homes. And rescue can be a crap shoot. Maybe I've seen a disproportionate number of bad matches because of what I do, so I'm biased.

Do all breeds belong in "All Breed" rescue?

I hope this doesn't come off as breedist, but does anyone else think maybe not all breeds should be in a general rescue and are best served in breed rescue? A friend just adopted a border collie mix puppy. He could be purebred but he was dumped so we don't know. I happen to know the foster home and ...

He's 3 inches taker than Cousteau and Labs are considered a large breed! I really hope she honors the difference in price between pet and show at the very least.

Just so unfair that you researched so carefully and this still happened. :-(

They did run creatinine and BUN. The urine wasn't as dilute as I thought it was, at least not the first morning sample. She did ask some diabetes related questions, but there hasn't been much weight change and her blood sugar was good. If she's not looking better in 2 weeks, I'll send out a sample t...

Re: Leaking Lots of Urine

Did a CBC and chem panel and all is normal. The vet noted some sensitivity and wonders if Havana is backing off from Pixel because she hurts. So she's back on Proin for incontinence and Vetprofin for pain. We'll see where she is with pain after a 2 week course with the Vetprofin and if necessary loo...
