Re: New baby needs nursing

An increased amount of potato helped my guy put weight on after loosing a bunch due to giardia. Oatmeal is also good. I have also heard of people adding fat (butter, lard, etc) to the dog's diet in larger numbers to gain weight. Given that she is so malnourished I would slowly start and only slowly ...

Re: Thyroid testing?

Yes, he was estimated to be born Feb 2013. The strange thing is, he starts greeting as usual, then 1-2 Mins after he suddenly goes stiff and lifts his lip/air snaps. Unfortunately he is so super fast with it that I am too slow to react. The last time I saw him go stiff I opened my mouth and before a...

Re: Thyroid testing?

I would just have a vet do it and send it to their labs. I'm in Europe ;) I actually may wait until September though. I am graduating with my Masters in August and will likely move again. I think I'd feel better doing it with one vet instead of potentially having values from one than havig to deal w...

Thyroid testing?

Hello all, I am thinking about testing Ranger's thyroid. I had it tested in August, but the vet only tested T4, which apparently is not the full thyroid pannel to test. I was recommended to test T4, T3, TSH and antibodies. Reason: Since September 2015 he has now 4 times shown airsnapping/lip lifting...

Re: No more dogs on my bed, ever!

Can you just keep your bedroom door shut if you are not there to watch them? Ranger is not a snuggler, so he doesn't come up on the bed when I sleep in it anyway (I used to be able to invite him for an occasional snuggle, but that's over now too as he has aged, but that worked on invitation). Since ...

Re: terrifying shooting sounds

Connie, I will try find a treat he'll take, but due to his many intolerances it may be hard to find something that is also soft and that is high value enough. And since it is every half hour I cannot really just use something that he doesn't tolerate as even with the little bits he'll end up getting...

Oh good. I'm glad others think so. It's been recommended to me so many times and it just never made that much sense to me.

He won't take treats. But I just got brand-new duck liver treats I can try.

terrifying shooting sounds

So darn it :-( The farmers here put up some sort of devices that make 2 loud shooting sounds every half hour that echo over the barren fields and off the mountains to scare the thousands of geese and seagulls from eating the seeds. There's no way to avoid it unless I don't go outside at all and acco...

Oh no! We just had a positive giardia diagnosis right before christmas (fun) and still not 100% sure if we are rid off it yet (given the false negatives with these tests, will never know 100%). Remember cleaning, cleaning, cleaning with giardia :-( and apparently the regular cleaning stuff doesn't k...

Re: Titer testing

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I decided to just not titer and wait until I may need to vax for a reason again (e.g. if he has to go into boarding, which unfortunately atm every single one I went to always required it). His rabies is up to date and I wouldn't vax right now anyway given his ...

Re: Titer testing

Connie, since Ranger tends to have GI issues which may also affect his immune system though (I mean, from what I read dogs that get giardia do usually also tend to have a weakened immune system), would you reconsider titer?

Thanks Sherri. His results from July 2014 were as follows: CDV IgG POS @ 1:1250 CAV POS @ 1:256 CPV-IgG NEG As mentioned he got the DHPPV combo booster the following December, since they do not do a parvo one alone. I have not been at the vet clinic here yet, but had emailed them if they do titer te...

Titer testing

So, Ranger was up for his DHPPV booster in December, which I didn't give him because he was dealing with giardia. I am thinking about doing titers instead, but I was wondering if I even need to? Ranger got his immunization from the shelter and as far as I know they just followed the usual procedure ...

Re: What are your best "real food" kibble toppers?

Great topic. Ranger currently gets a canned food, which he is tolerating well. I was going to get it balanced by Sabine, but company is being difficult and I can't get the info. Since I cannot do a homemade at the moment, I will stick to it and hope to just work with toppers. Do you tend to try and ...

Giardia

Well merry Christmas. Ranger was just diagnosed with Giardia. Still waiting on blood results too if there's anything else since interestingly he doesn't have diarrhea but rather really hard/constipated stool. Weight loss and regular energy and eating like a horse Are his other symptoms. I'll ...

Changed the food to one with only 50% duck and 50% sweet potato, squash, evening prim rose oil. Doing MUCH better! Don't want to jinx it yet, but hopefully this will work out longer! I added some potato and eggs yesterday as he needs some weight back on and that went well too. *fingers crossed*

Lisa, tell me about it. Anyone think I should try a different food since...

Re: Food Question, Again

There is the same brand food with duck instead of turkey, looks the same otherwise, reckon that might be better? I am also thinking about adding some cooked rice to increase carb content as he is struggeling with weight a bit, but I know that might not be good for his constipation? I will try and se...

So I switched Ranger to the turkey and rice wet food: Ingredient(s): Turkey (min.65%), Turkey Liver (min. 5%), Brown Rice (min. 5%), Minerals, Seaweed, Chicory Root. Re: Food Question, Again

Yeah, I know it's not ideal. I will try out the canned wet food and see how that goes. If he tolerates it, it's at least a start away from kibble. I am hoping that in about 1-2 years I will be able to devote more resources to home-made, just not possible at the moment.

Hi everyone, it is me once again with a food question. Unfortunately, while Ranger has been doing good on his kibble, I am thinking about switching because I am not happy with the company. Twice now I have gotten a bag and it smelled weird (got them refunded, but still...) and in one piece of kibble...

I like the idea of the shelves, I think cats enjoy being up high much more too than down low. If you watch the cat whipserer stuff he always recommends shelves in fear situations too! May be an idea for training too, but I would also not continue training until moved and settled again. It may be oka...

Ranger doesn't like summer. He is not a heat dog, he prefers cool weather, which also amps his energy by millionfold it seems haha. He does seem to enjoy doing some water (up to tummy) things when it is warmer, but he is also not picky to do those when it is not so warm haha. He goes nuts over snow,...

Thanks Lisa. I will do so. He seems to be much more normal at the moment. Got him some other anti-diarrhea meds from the vet and he apparently does much better on them (according to my mom). I am currently scouting out my new home. Ranger is staying with my mom for two weeks until I can bring him he...
