Re: Border collies/English Shepherds vs. the World

Connie, I think that's pretty right on. My neighbor, also a dog nerd person, reflected and said maybe he looks too feral/wolfy to a dog that has been bred to guard lifestock. Or smells too "wild." Elkhounds are an extremely old breed, so there's that. Maybe... The problems have come when someone say...

Border collies/English Shepherds vs. the World

Every single border or ES that Ole and I have met, has, in varying degree, been super snarky or even out and out wants to KILL him. (Ironically one of the therapy dogs in our organization, so frustrating). It happened again yesterday with a border and I really want to know what is triggering this. I...

Re: Ole's got a bright red anus

There is no smell at all. I think it's from his consuming whatever stuff I'm currently trying to get Sofia to eat. Which can vary from wet dog to wet cat food, baby food, salmon, bread, you name it. He's still been getting mostly normal dog food but I'll keep his busy nose out of the leftovers and t...

Ole's got a bright red anus

Poor guy is not *that* bothered but buttholes should not be red, agreed? He's pressed is bottom on the floor and scooted just a little bit about twice a day. When he goes out in the snow you'd think that'd be the best time to do that, but he doesn't. He just carries on rolling in the snow and rubbin...

I wish I could help. Sofia has a different problem with renal failure and not wanting to eat.
I don't know what Cushings requires, but have you tried baby food? The apple and chicken is quite delish and pure.

Love the dog communication

I love watching my dogs communicate with each other. This was a cute little drama from this morning after a pretty big snow. Drama in the dog yard. Ole is about 10, Sofia is 14 in a month...she was just finished chasing him all over the yard, hehe. http://youtu.be/KEU-28dJb3g?list=UUgMeAD4IxNGWlobz_...

Re: I dreamed up a new dog!

I'll have to do a drawing or painting of these dogs. They were so cool.

It was a great dream. It also involved hugging big, tall handsome men, too.

I dreamed up a new dog!

Of all my friends, you are the ones who have possibly done this, too. I had a dream this morning that I was tasked with checking out the breeding situation of a woman. She kept her dogs in the "basement" in the dream. As she petted her old, creaky, mangy GIANT (almost collie sized) "shelties" she to...

Re: Dog related legal question

I'd have a lawyer look at the contract. You can't sign away rights. If the contract states that dogs are evaluated for aggression before being in daycare, then seems to me they owe him some money and bowing and scraping. This seems like a very poor business practice.

Re: Suddenly...HAIR!

I'm glad it's not just me. We have had a mild winter (because you in the Lower 48 got our winter, poor things, sorry!) and a very temperate, rainy summer so far. We haven't even cracked 80 degrees for the most part. Dog Shedding as Global Warming Indication. Yeah, that's it. I'll write an a...

Suddenly...HAIR!

 In the last 48 hours (which coincides with solstice, btw--24 hr light here in Fairbanks) my dogs have gone nuclear with their shedding. I mean, they have NEVER actually BLOWN coat but holy mama Ole the Elkhound is exploding! Sofia is more sedate about the shedding but both of them are blowing ...

Re: New Home Feeder Here

Thanks, Sabine. The fish have the bones in them, and yes, I leave the egg shells in the scrambled eggs. :-) I have to say that since I added salmon, and not just salmon oil, to Sofia's diet that her shedding is going much better. The salmon oils should have done the trick but feeding the whole salmo...

New Home Feeder Here

Yep. Ole dog will throw up, and bile barf very consistently if all I feed him is kibble. Good kibble, Fromm kibble. Sofia is fine. But Ole is the Problem Dog in this regard. He's been checked for everything, including x-rays. No masses, no pancreatitis, all his blood numbers are spang in the middle,...

Re: Roscoe - growth near heart and lungs

Jen, I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I'm with the rest regarding chemo. For me, it would not be an option due to the cost, I just don't have that kind of money, and I don't even know if any vets in my town do it. Quality of life is everything, and as long as he's happy and bouncy and eating...

Re: Mysterious Fearis Ruining Sofia's Night Life (and mine)

I'm sure that there is a sort of cognitive disorder thing going on, although I must say neither of the dogs have an signs of dementia or confusion. It's like night terrors. Both are just a brilliant as they have always been, except when irrational with fear. I think that pressure on a tumor or limbs...

Re: Mysterious Fearis Ruining Sofia's Night Life (and mine)

Bad News Update: It's true I have an irrational neighbor who sets off fireworks in the wee hours. But he's cut back. I just talked to my son about Sofia's twin, Athena. Guess what he said she was doing? Yup. Same thing. Pacing, drooling, total fear and hiding. She tried to hide under the Christmas t...
