Re: Acupuncture expectations

I would cancel too, which sucks because it's hard to find someone sometimes. Are there other docs in your area that do acupuncture or chiro? I agree that a doc who doesn't listen is the worst. YOU know your dog best and clearly dismissing your knowledge isn't helpful to Ben's healing.

Re: Oh the smell!!!

I second the beano or Gas-x for a short term fix. Could he be nibbling something on the sly? I have to baby sit Max outside in the spring. He thinks all the garden shoots are his personal salad bowl and it gives him gas sometimes.

Re: Acupuncture expectations

I saw the video, poor guy. He's wobbly alright. When he's relaxed is his lumbar throwing out heat? Max has compressed vertebrae in his neck and lumbar region and I know he's in need of adjustment when those spots are hot to the touch. I honestly feel like Max's adjustments are more thorough than min...

Re: Acupuncture expectations

I might try chiro, you should see immediate improvement in gait if it's going to work. Fwiw, Max always has a weird poo after a chiro or cold laser appointment. We haven't done acupuncture so I can't speak to that.

Re: Got Stay? May 2018 Training Challenge

Max used to have a decent stay, back when he was only selectively deaf. Now that he's fully deaf for real he's "forgotten". We'll work on rebuilding that. Extra credit will be a prolonged stay or a stay out of sight, neither of which he's ever been solid on.

Re: Heartworm treatment

Holy cow that's a lot for Doxy! Fwiw, I got 100 mg doxy for max at Costco for about $1 a pill. I've heard lots of different prices for it but searched goodrx for a better price when we did it on the regular. I'm glad you have a plan and die-off won't be so severe and financing can dull the pain. As ...

I saw this on facebook and it sucks. I'm sorry you and Row are going through this. I think you're right with the pests becoming more resililliant. Re: Training challenge?

Max needs some brain stimulation, I'm in. He knows target, sit, stay (knowing and doing are totally different though), shake. I Need to figure out something new for him to learn that doesn't involve his mouth and the visual cue for it since he's deaf now.

Re: When a friend gets a designer dog from a breeder

I have met some nice doodles, mostly golden and labs. (Full disclosure, my dog-niece is a g-doodle). I will say they are not really golden or poodle at that point and it really is a crap shoot what personality and coat traits you're going to get. I am not a fan of mutts for mutt's sake and yes, peop...

Glad you have a plan. You could always just cook the raw for a bit until she's comfortable with it and then mix cooked and raw to transition fully to raw. It's good to know you have some other novel proteins to try too.

Re: Talk to me about skin/allergy problems

I hate to say it but I'd recommend a course of abx (cephalexin is my go-to for this) just to get the sores healed up. You don't want a raging staph infection to deal with too. It won't cure the cause but it will help the symptoms so you can work on the allergies and it's fairly cheap since these are...

Re: Talk to me about skin/allergy problems

We tried apoquel, it was $$$ and I didn't see much improvement personally. I'm also twitchy when it comes to messing with immunosupressants so there's that. Probiotics are what finally cleared the skin for us and I found a human one, with no "doggy fillers" was the best route though some will argue ...

Four little words. You. Can't. Fix. Stupid. I don't think you're friend is unintelligent necessarily, I do think this was a stupid move and your friend is digging in their heels. All you can do is keep your mouth shut. SMH

Max has some symptoms, hair loss and slow regrowth, heat seeking, irritability. We suspected he was low-normal for a long time. This is the first time we have a number indicating dysfunction. I'm really in it for symptom improvement at this point.

Re: Would you ever muzzle a dog for behavioral reasons?

Yes, I would. If Max could play well with dogs (he can't, all the BAT in the world won't make him comfortable playing with dogs. Ever.) and all that stood in the way was his mouth, I'd muzzle. It'd be a happy time, almost a predictor of good things to come but I'd use it. I don't think there is anyt...

Re: Anesthesia 101

So we (Max) either lost 9 or 11 teeth, depending on which chart you look at and how you count the X's on the paper. I think he will feel better but now he's getting used to having no teeth between his canines. He's on tramadol, which is ok to help manage the pain. He started exhaling forcefully toni...

Re: Anesthesia 101

We went for the consult yesterday, I really like the vet. She's confident, almost to the point of cocky but not. She told me she'd seen worse, both in terms of health and teeth and, while most vets wouldn't touch him, she would and could do it right. She laid out an anesthesia plan including mophine...

Anesthesia 101

Talk to me about anesthesia. Max is likely going in for a dental cleaning with the canine dentist at the specialty clinic in early March. We do a consult on Monday. I have labs, drawn yesterday, which show kidney function is great, everything else is meh (Max's normal). They know there is a tumor on...

I'll tell you the same thing you told me about Max's tumors. It's OK to do what you think is best and it's ok if money is a factor. It is for everyone. It is ok to consider long term consequences of treatment and any quality of life issues for him. I'm sorry you're dealing with this, I know it sucks...

I hate tumors

Damn, damn double damn. I had Max in 2 weeks ago for his 6 month heavy petting check up and he got a fairly clean bill of health, all things considered. Monday I took him in for nails and a chiro adjustment on his normal schedule and to point out a new lump on his sternum. The vet also noticed a new...

Convincing mom not to become a back yard breeder.

So my mom casually mentioned that when she retired she might like to breed labs. Knowing my mom, by the time she's telling people she's thinking about something, she's made up her mind to do it. This is 5-10 years off before she retires. Also, she lives in the country where health tests, contracts a...

Can I ask why the low fat? Fat usually, with the exception maybe exacerbating some of the of weird liver values Cushing's creates, doesn't become an issue b/c of Cushings. Food issues aren't a general issue with Cushing's, if you factor out the incessant hunger when the disease isn't well controlled...

Re: Ketogenic diet and cancer

I hadn't thought about pancreas issues...derp. That much fat would be horrible for him, though I could cut his sugar intake. Most of his treats tend to be fruits and veggies, I could stick to more veggies over fruits. He doesn't need to lose weight, he needs to put on weight, if anything. I've been ...
