Re: Frustration Behaviors

<r>Russell sort of rears up, shuffles his feet, and rrruffle-rrruffles - not a bark, more like soft talking at me. He might paw at an object (box game thinking) or throw out a trick for me. His trump card (so he thinks) is playing dead - it's his best trick and he thinks surely that will get a rewar...

Re: Test - How smart is your dog?

<r>I just did it with Russell. He got a 24. He was easily able to do well on all of them - I think clicker training deserves some of the credit for that - except for the one where you put a treat under the sofa with a string tied to it. I gave him extra chances and he never came close to even unders...

The piece just seems meandering and sort of exaggeratedly unbiased, to...

Re: Help save Scruffy the allergy dog!

<t>Thank you for all these suggestions... I think they do have good reason to believe he has environm...

Help save Scruffy the allergy dog!

<t>My future BIL & SIL's dog Scruffy is suffering badly from allergies. He's a mix they adopted about a year ago, most likely Bichon-poodle about 2-3yo. He's had the allergies since they adopted him but they're having very little success making him any better and they're getting desperate for an...

Re: Animals in Translation

<t>I enjoyed reading it. I think that a lot of her info on animals is scientifically flawed, particularly when it comes to dogs (not her forte by any means)... she's a big proponent of the hybrid vigor theory on dog breeding which I found a little tough to swallow. But her observations (as opposed t...

Re: Not gonna read any more Jon Katz. Ever.

<t>I've disliked Katz from the moment I read The New Work of Dogs. He's narcissistic, condescending, misogynistic, chauvinistic, self-righteous, and completely ignorant about dog behavior/training/nutrition/you-name-it. And yet I still went on to read Bedlam Farm. :P Didn't change my opinion of him ...

Re: Puppy mill featured in Marie Claire

<t>Thank you all for helping. I emailed MC yesterday and now I wish I had gone through the puppymill site first, because it's worse than I'd imagined. It would be bad enough if the magazine had listed some quasi-respectable BYB but Puppy Haven is a bottom of the barrell puppy mill. They keep scores ...

<t>It's great that you're putting in so much effort to find a good food for Murray, I'm sure it will pay off in the end. What foods did you try, specifically? I think if we could look at the ingredients side-by-side maybe we'd see a common denominator that could be the culprit. As Jen said, probioti...

<t>If you can't get the smell out of the carpet OR the pad, the urine may have soaked all the way down to the floorboards. If this is the case, your next step would be to seal all the floorboards in the area(s) with shellac or a primer made of tinted shellac, making sure it seeps down in all the cra...

Re: Lost my temper with an irresponsible owner.....(long)

<t>You had an emotional reaction... it can be hard to keep your wits about you in the face of a sudden stressor like that - you were afraid for your dog and you had a "fight" reaction. I don't think you should feel bad about it. Sometimes fear comes out as anger, and I think that's pretty normal. Th...
