Re: 13th annual “What are you going to do with your dogs” thread

Thanks for starting it for me. I’ll go ahead and join in: Our 2018 Goals: 2018 Goals: Roxy - Rally titles, Novice at the least. Still looking for what gets her going. Maybe Barn Hunt, maybe Fast CAT if her prey drive kicks in. She will visit AKC and UKC conformation off and on as the urge strikes me...

Figment/Gidget is gone RIP

Sweet Gidget, from the last Colliewog litter, passed on yesterday. She had developed a cancerous tumor that spread through her lungs. My brother had done an awesome job of caring for her over the years and she will be sorely missed.

First of all, feeding your cat a food made by Just for Dogs made me chuckle. Regarding, yucca, it’s in many processed dog foods, so I’m guessing those reactions you found are relating to its raw form.

I'd also give a probiotic twice a day, Metro is a drug that is notoriously hard on gut flora.
I hadn’t heard that. We always use metronidazole for diarrhea and it clears everything up.

Re: Recurring diarrhea

Try taking food back a notch to maybe cottage cheese and pumpkin, then add some rice baby food. Sounds like her gut might need a break. Just a little aside. I have gastroparesis and IBS, so rarely have normal stools myself. I will eat rice baby cereal and cottage cheese for a few days and it works f...

AKC Farm Dog Certified test

If you’re looking for a fun title to add, check out the new AKC Farm Dog Certified (FDC) test. It’s like a CGC on a farm, with elements of a temperament test thrown in (unusual surfaces). Grytz and OE recently passed the two required tests to earn their titles and we had a lot of fun.

Re: Heartworm treatment

Do you know what type of test they used? (In house or outside lab?). I’d probably want an outside lab retest just to be safe before treatment. Years ago, we did have one patient test positive on a Snap test but negative when tested at a lab. Just a thought ...

I understand where you’re coming from. I don’t do nosework, so don’t understand the rigors involved. But experts in the field, whether respected or not, created the rules that they’re following. That’s all I was getting at. AKC just takes money and sends certificates, they don’t write the rules.

it's also a money-making scam by the AKC.
It’s not a scam. People petitioned to get these events added because they like the accessibility. I understand if you have negative feelings against AKC for personal reasons, but in this case, they are just giving the consumer what they want.

The DMWYD titles have more options listed. I did those and we were grandfathered in before the title ca certificate part was implemented.

Re: Would you ever muzzle a dog for behavioral reasons?

My terriers are muzzle trained for racing. They have no issue and actually get excited to see them, because it means race time. I think people don’t like them based upon looks alone. They don’t understand their purpose.

Re: Please explain conformation placing to me!

And then, if there were lots of classes of Wirehaired Vizslas (like owner handled, puppy, etc) then the winners of each class would compete for winners dog? They don’t have enough of this breed to do that though I don’t think. There was only one class as far as I know. So then if there were multipl...

I compete and title because it’s my hobby. I love titles and certificates from various registries and venues. There’s nothing wrong with not wanting it, but for some it’s entertainment and living vicariously through my dogs’ achievements. Lol

The Award of Merit is only seen in specialty sho...

A time honored ODO tradition. I usually do this at the end of each year but I’m a little late. I'll leave out body piercing and non-registration tattooing because that's obviously some kind of crazy.
Sadly, this happens a lot in the hairless breeds. Definitely crazy. It's in most breeders' contracts that if this is done, they'll remove dog and report owner for abuse.
