I'm a new user and my dog Logan has been on Blue Buffalo Organic for three years and it seems to have been discontinued. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good replacement? We really want to stay with organic food.

welcome! It is frustrating to find a product you like and have it disppear.
Natura's Karma line is marketed as organic, Castor and Pollux does an organic line ; PetGuard also has organic food available.
I can't say anything much about the products other than that I have talked to a few people who used each of them and liked them, but maybe they'll give you a jumping-off point in finding a replacement?

The picture in your avatar looks like you've got a cutie - tell us more!

Karma is made by Natura, the company that also makes Innova and EVO. I can tell you that Karma was changed in the last few months. It was the only food mom's dog would eat. She's very picky. With the changes she's stopped eating it. It also is very expensive now. Previously it was about $16-17 for a 6 lb bag, now is $27 for a 7 lb bag.

I can also tell you that my 3 dogs are NOT picky at all. They have eaten any food I've put in front of them (except 1 canned food). At one time in their lives, they'd eaten Karma. None of them will eat the new & improved version. They normally eat Innova dry, but even though this is made by the same co, something is very different about it.

I think it is very expensive for what you get.

Did they start putting pure gold in it? Geez... The dogs are probably afraid that if they'll eat it, refills won't be affordable anymore.

Honestly since organic is not really officially defined, your best bet might be to look at other foods by brands that are generally known to have good quality ingredients. Just might be easier to find another good food to settle on without really limiting options. Innova, Orijen/Acana, Wellness, uhhh... can't think of others off the top of my head but I'm sure others will fill you in further.

I think the first thing to look at is what were the main ingredients in the Blue, and what kind of intolerances does your dog have? It is also a good idea to "rotate" foods every so often (maybe twice a year?) if your dog doesn't have trouble switching.

Natura made some changes to the Karma out of concern over what happened during the whole recall disaster in 2007, plus they removed wheat and kamut.

All food ingredients have become more expensive, and if a company makes an effort to exclude ingredients from China etc. as much as possible, the price goes up. Also note that karma is one of the few products that actually also includes only organic meat, where many other brands make up most of the meat portion from non-organic sources (e.g. there is no such thing as organic chicken meal for example) and as a result only contain 70% or so organic ingredients.

Btw., Tatyana, yes, organic is defined, very clearly even:

Whoops. Was I thinking of holistic?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I think we are going to try the Karma is seems to be the one that you guys think might do the trick and other friends have said the same thing. I do like the idea of switching his food up every so often. I will try and get more pictures of Logan, but just a little background, first of all I mentioned three years and I have no clue where I got that number from because he isn't even two yet, haha. So unless his parents were fed that food thats really not possible. He was a birthday present to me from my partner and has really has been a joy in our lives. I have many many pictures of him that I will post.

Tatyana, that's possible. Neither "holistic" nor "human grade" or a bunch of other buzz words are legally defined. I have an article prepared on that but still have to edit and format it a bit before I can post it.

And welcome to the forum, James and Logan! smile

A good, relatively inexpensive organic equivalent to Blue Buffalo is the By Nature Organic by Blue Seal if it's available in your area. In some places it's sold under the name Brandon Farms. I also use Natural Balance Organic. If you want to alternate with a beef product, Wenaewe is excellent but harder to find and more expensive.
