I picked up a 35 lb bag of the new Canidae formula yesterday- they shrunk the bag from 40 to 35 lbs. Cost went from $43 to $38. Anyway, the first thing I notice is the smell is different, and the shape is identical to the premium edge chicken and rice I bought a few weeks/month ago. I had tried the PE to see if I could save some $$..Well, my Boxer couldn't digest it, and no one really did well on it. The PE smelled a lot like fish. Thankfully, this canidae doesn't- not that fish is bad, but I suspect that formula, and primarily the fish aspect is what caused my Boxer to be ill. Anyway, the jury is out. The Boxer had gas last night- something he never has on the old canidae. It may just be the change in formulas, but it also may mean he has to go on Orijen - because I won't put him through all that tumult again. So, there you have it. I am not for or against it yet... Will update as we go.

On another board that I am on, an overwhelming consensus is that Canidae's new changes bite the big one. People are desperately trying to find something to work for their dogs now. We tried Candidae and it never worked for our crew, so I'm already a bit bias, but I think Canidae should be ashamed, they had a good thing going on that worked for a lot of dogs... stupid I do, however, hope you are successful. I hate to see so many dogs with tummy upsets. frown

We had our guys on Canidae for quite a while. We were pleased with the results and the price. And (whispering)I kind of avoided ODO for a while because of the negative attitude towards the company, since I had had nothing but good support and results. However, I went to purchase a bag a few weeks ago and noticed the new looking, smaller bag. Compared the ingredients with an original formula bag, showed it to the employees, who didn't know a thing about a formula change. I took a chance and bought the new formula. And sadly we are searching for a new food. Both of our guys starting itching and chewing at their paws within a few days. So I'm humbly back to ODO, having seen the light. In the meantime, we're using California Natural while we find a permanent fix.

I have never been one to go along with something, until I see proof for myself... I guess it's the scientist in me. I am going to let my dogs tell me how the food works. I have tried many foods, and canidae was/is? the only thing that everyone did well on. So far no more gas from the boxer, and everyone is eating it well.

We too, are on California Natural until we find a fix. But my aussie Chico burps and farts a lot on that and I don't know why, there isn't much to it. He did well on the old Canidae. We also alternate with raw food.

My last bag was different - looks less "oily", which I don't like. I'll have to give it a few bags to see if I notice a difference in mine, but they have been doing so well, I will be very upset if they've made enough of a change to cause a problem! frown

I have fed my dog Canidae since she was 8wks old. It worked very well. But after the "outrage" I switched to Innova (I posted another thread about possible issues...) because I honestly do not like the idea that Diamond is now manufacturing all of Canidae Dry. Formula change because of the new mfg. And the shady'ness of how Canidae handled this. A lot of feed stores had no clue that anything changed. Granted the ingredients are not drastically different but something is not working. I know a few die hard Canidae feeders that have ALL complained of loose stools and vomitting. It was as if they just started to feed their dogs a totally new food (cold turkey). They were ANGRY to say the least. They all have switched to Innova, Merrick, Orijen, and Blue Buff.

I talked to a feed store owner who said that Canidae sales dropped since July 15. He said it is downright scary how bad sales are for Canidae. Less than a month ago it was the #1 food he was selling and now its not selling at all. He even had to take returns on it since people had no idea of the formula change. He was nice enough to print a sign stating the change and even printed info from the Canidae webpage and made copies for customers to take. He said Innova, CA Nat, and EVO have taken 1st place right now in sales.

I never tried the new ALS and do not plan to go back. The 4 friends all used ALS and all of their dogs had a negative reaction. Granted they can just "stick it out" until the dog gets use to it but they all changed for personal reasons like myself. Why support a company that seems to be sneaky and is going "big business" and using Diamond.

I think to combat this outrage Canidae is offering a special deal on the 35lb bags for this month only and will be releasing a grain free line come Sept to compete with EVO/Orijen/etc... Right now a 35lb bag normally goes for $42 in my area. Its on sale for $36.

Canidae shot themselves in the foot. But who knows, they may be the next Nutro...

It's a shame that they did this, way too many companies outsource. It's the same reason I switched my dog off of Natural Balance; after all the recalls with NB, etc. I wanted to find a food that was made 'in-house' and it took me a long time. I just hope they don't start outsourcing, too.

I have not tried the new formula yet but I have been looking for something to rotate with it. Since I moved, someplace has Healthwise. I plan to use that next and then give new Canidae a try after that. If they like Healthwise, it may be my main food since it is cheaper and made by Natura which I like. Innova makes my dogs gain weight though and is a lot more money. So hopefully they like Healthwise!

Well I've gone and done it....found myself an almost expired 40 lb. bag of the old formula today. That'll last us until I start reading more feedback about what everybody is going to because from what I've been reading, Canidae is SO over.

Call me the REBEL. I have now been feeding the new food for several days. Good stools- Boxer is the absolute hardest on this, and good coats/etc. I have no problems with it. Of course, I still am undecided, until they have been on it long enough for me to see any deleterious effects. But, for now, it's fine. I hope it stays that way, because there aren't many other choices- that I can afford.

I don't have any input on Canidae; I used a few of the cans but it's never been something I fed with regularily.

I just wanted to pop up and say Welcome to ODO, Chico (or Dogs All Day as Acorn would say lol) ! I hope you're able to find the info you're looking for, and that you stick around and get to know us. From your avatar your Aussie looks like a gorgeous guy. We love pictures (and have a whole forum just for them), so if you want to show him off, please feel free!

Hi guys

Update on the Canidae. All systems are good. Boxer doing well, no stomach upset, normal stool. All dogs eating well. I may look into rotating onto Cal Natural- as that seems good too, but so far so good.

I'm well into a bag of the new formula of L & R. June and Linc are doing fine, but Zippy started scratching himself SILLY. Not sure what his deal is, whether it's food or not, but I've put him on Pinnacle with Ginger, and it's eased up. Stool wise they're fine, haven't noticed any change in coat or weight, but it's early yet. I'm not sure what I'll do when I finish this bag.

I am bitter about the change. Dallas did very well on Canidae for a long time. Suddenly he was scratching himself raw and his hair was falling out. After an exhaustive search, he is now on Orijen Six Fresh Fish. He is thriving on it, but it did take almost six weeks for his hair to start coming back in... he looked moth-eaten... frown

well the store i went to today said they will be getting in the 3 NEW products late next week and thinks this will "satisfy" the Canidae customers who jumped ship. He said two Grain Free foods. The ALS Grain Free and Salmon Grain Free. Then a new flavor Beef and Ocean Fish. Said this should calm the storm but they are still being mfg'ed by Diamond. Price wise he wasn't sure as he hasn't gotten the price sheet. He thinks a lot of people who are using Orijen might switch to Canidae now. Uhhhhh. He did say EVO users probably will not switch to Canidae because "that crowd is tough to sell".

So looks like a new line of foods coming out but will it be a bust? Or will it be a take over?!

I have already switched to Innova and am not going back to Canidae. Even though I was a die hard user for 2yrs the new product line does not interest me.

Jay, I think a lot of people will think like you - if they have found a new food that works, why go back to products from a company that disappointed in the past?

So far everything still good. My boxer's coat actually looks better than it did prior. Good stools on everyone too- and no more volume than on the other canidae.

Update

Okay, so, everything is still pretty good. Stools are normal, but I think there may be just a tad increase in volume. My Boxer had a stomach issue for a few days, but I think that is just him- his whole life, no matter what I fed he had this.

If I could afford, I would switch to Orijen- that is one good food, and everyone loves it. For now, we stay on this.

So, I think I concede defeat on this one... First thing- the coats look good, everyone in good nik, except for my old girl. But, the stools lean toward loose in my Boxer, and one of my other dogs occasionally. Also, my Boxer's ear is inflamed again (something that went away when on Taste of the Wild). Well, I had to go get dog food today, and checked out the brands again, and ended up getting taste of the wild prairie, as the dogs did well - Lucy even got fat, on it. It is $40 for 30 lbs, which is a lot, but I figure I will feed a bit less of it, and less canned Evangers should save some. I remember that the Premium Edge I had them on, which was made by Diamond is so distinctly similar to this new Canidae, it could almost be interchangeable in appearance- so I think in the end, the dogs will be better off. Just have to feed Lucy very little of this!
