We heard back from the rescue we applied to for Ace, the little Brittany mix - no decision on their part yet but just to confirm they'd received the application.

Apparently he can be a submissive pee-er - not big-time, but on occasion. It's totally not a deal-breaker for either BF or myself, which we told them. We have laminate flooring and we'll buy a jug of Nature's Miracle.

It's not something I've dealt with before. Nutmeg has peed out of excitement a handful of times (mostly on the bed tongue ) and not in almost a year, but it seems to have resolved itself.

Any advice or resources I should look into?

Belly Bands if it is a problem, but how we deal with it at the Humane Society where I volunteer is that when you come home from work, you don't reach down, pet, get the dog all excited, you come in, ignore, go about your business and let him come to you when he's all calmed down.

Ella used to occasionally do this. For her, the triggers were pretty specific (other people entering her space, then 'saying hi' to her). I mostly dealt by making sure she was 'empty' when I had people coming over. Failing that, I also told people to ignore her. As she's matured and calmed down ever so slightly, it's turned into a non-issue.

I'd probably ask for more details to get an idea if everything under the sun makes him pee (ie, totally randomly occurs), or if it's a bit more limited. Just so's you know what you're getting in for.

I can't wait for more news about this!

Yup, what they said. If this is an age related problem (dog is young), then just being consistent about not making a fuss will take care of it.

If it's a stress-related problem due to poor previous handling, then it will take more dedication and possibly a strategy making sure you interact when he's good and pottied out, and also only in areas where you don't mind ignoring the accident for a little bit. Sometimes even just the cycle of your stopping everything and going to get the cleanup items is unpleasant enough to reinforce the behavior/response.

I'd make sure that they know it's submissive peeing and not something else. When we got Bella, they told us she had a minor submissive peeing issue. I'm now convinced that they were either wrong or lying. She has an incontinence problem, which, im-limitedexperience-o, is harder to deal with than the submissive peeing.

The other thing is, is it excited peeing or true submission. I have one who pees if she is worried. Not if she's happy to see you or any of that. Only if she's worried, if you scold her, or yell (not necessarily at her) or act in any way she deems harsh. She has gotten better as she has relaxed and realised that she is safe here. But occasionally, if I trip and then swear or something, and she is near by she will pee. Or if I grab her by her collar and pull, (like if she's door bolting), she will flip over and pee. The last time it was cleaning her ears. I put some solution in her ears and she screamed, flipped over and peed. Everything needs to be calm, relaxed and reassuring...
