Oh, he's a miniature sheepdog, of course! tongue

Actually, I think he's a special KaeJae mix. smile

Not to see a Crestie under every rock, but look at his body shape. Is he painfully malnourished or whippet-shaped a la Chinese crested? The hairy hairless ones have to have their ears shaved young or they tip down a lot of times (Zhi's perked up perfectly but she doesn't have the really thick furnishings they want).

I see "lacing" under his hair, on the legs. Come on, some groomer out there, squint at this guy, imagine him with the beard shaved off, and tell me I'm not insane. Okay, tell me I'm not insane in THIS instance! tongue

Zhi's favorite groomer is coming up for a visit on Sunday and we are getting some video of the process with master groomer's permission. From street mongrol to princess My Little Pony - the transformation is worth seeing.

I dunno, but I would want him if I met him...his hair sure does look thin on his front legs....maybe due to a poor diet? I think he has a very cute face for sure....he'd fit in nicely with my ying/yang dogs, KaeJae and Gina.

That thin hair is what made me wonder about Crestie-ness.

Zhi's looks like that when she's not shaved down. That's how you can tell she's not a puff - her hair never gets any longer on her legs, belly, and it's incredibly thin on her back - you can see skin just like you can see with that dog. It's why I keep her shaved down - she looks like I mistreat her, or like she's got demodectic mange. tongue

You know, Becca - I was thinking the same thing when I first adopted Quigley (he was rail thin too), but not anymore.

He has the same very sparse to no coat in some areas (belly, inner thighs), those adorable dark spots on light skin that show through, and if I don't strip him, his coat would look a lot like that little guy's (and then fall out in clumps lol ).

Unfortunately I don't have any early photos that show it well, these come the closest though:

Quigley's got lacing too! I always thought he looked very Crestie in the face. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if both that dog and Quigley were mixes. Hairlessness is incompletely dominant, meaning it will express but not completely, depending on what it's mixed with and what other genes are inherited (there's another set of loci that determine the pattern and level of hairlessness).

I'll have to dig out the picture I took a few weeks ago of Zhi maxed out in hairiness. lol

The spots are actually fairly common in Jacks and other light colored terriers, too. Check out the photo gallery at http://www.therealjackrussell.com/fun/galleryshow.php for example.

You'll also see lots of photos with the "incorrect" fuzzy coats. I do know that the undesirable (according to the standard - I like it love ) abundant, non-harsh coat in wirehaired Dachsies goes back to when the Dandie Dinmont Terrier was crossed in a long time ago, so my guess is that something similar happened to the wirehaired Jacks/Parsons.

KaeJae has the spots and when I first got him, he had super thin hair on his legs and belly too. His lets are real speckled.

Oliver (beagle, they say purebred) has those spots and super thin hair on his belly and the inside of his legs too. I was surprised to see his naked, polka dotted belly!

I personally think Cresties are just a mutant terrier, so it's really hard to tell. From a population standpoint of course any random bred dog is much more likely to be a more popular terrier like Jack or Westie. But in urban areas who knows? laugh
