Oh boy. Its Marco this time.
Marco was "off" since the moment we woke up today. He was sorta shaky and skittish. And his stomach was making gurgling noises. Didn't touch his food. I figured maybe he was nauseous, he has these mornings sometimes when his stomach is growling and he doesnt want to eat and just has a weird start to the morning. Then after a long nap in the afternoon (or if he vomits bile) he perks back up. Doesn't happen too often but i wasn't particularly worried.
He ate some grass during the morning walk. In fact he was very determined to eat grass and kept pulling me back toward it as i was trying to pry him away. Oh yeah - he had totally perfectly normal poop in the morning.
But anyway he seemed rather uncomfortable throughout the day. He seemed unable to sleep and was sort of shivery, staying under the covers. But again, he behaves like that when he's nauseous. So I just kept him warm under the covers and didn't bother him much. He wasn't particularly active or interested in playing. I took him on two walks, in case he had to go. Peed both times, no poop.
Then of course a bit after we got home after the walk, he decided to have diarrhea, and it was totally bloody. Not gushing, but enough for me to notice it without questioning whether I'm seeing blood or not. He pooped out all the grass he ate (at least i'm assuming its all, he ate more than i thought). And just for gross details, i'll mention that i think there was more mucus than "substance" to the poo.
Ever since then he settled down and went to sleep in a sunny spot, no longer seems to be acting uncomfortable. No vomit (yet). It doesn't seem like an emergency, he seems to feel better now. Could the grass have cut him and caused the blood?
Any chances it might heal on its own? i know when Perry was hospitalized with HGE he was vomiting blood as well as having bloody diarrhea. It was also sudden, and he was put on steroids, fluids and antibiotics. Fluids being for dehydration and antibiotics "just in case" because we didn't know what caused it. I'm wondering if it would be alright just to observe him right now? I'm gonna give him some slippery elm.

I wouldn't think the grass would cut him. Let us know what the vet says. Fingers crossed the slippery elm settles his tummy and whatever this is passes on it's own.

Geepers, Rudi has had mucusy poop on and off this week, too! I figured it was the addition of Tripette causing a bit of panceatic problems for my sensitive boy.
Rudi isn't a grass eater, but Sophie sure is. She's never had bloody poop from it, though. And she's even eaten sharp needles of our evergreen trees! So I rather doubt that any kind of normal grass would have blades sharp enough to irritate Marco's intestinal tract and cause bleeding.
I hope this passes quickly for Marco and it's just one of those things that leaves you scratching your head and thinking, "I wonder what caused that" and you all can carry on merrily with your lives.

Both boys get mucusy poo on occasion. Usually when there is soft poo involved. They are rather sensitive and can seemingly be set off by nothing out of the ordinary. So the mucus wasn't really what i was worried about. IGs are actually supposedly notorious for sensitive stomachs and pickiness, and the breeder admit to sensitive tummies in her line, its something we're more or less used to.
buuuuuut so far so good. I gave him a teaspoon of dry colostrum with a capsule of slippery elm. Since my post, he did briefly go back to acting funny. Like his stomach hurt, he kept lying in funny positions. And then all of a sudden something came over him and he went into play mode and got all active and happy again. Ate dinner without a problem. I gave a little less food than usual but he seemed very enthusiastic about dinner. No new diarrhea or anything. fingers crossed that normal poo will be restored by tomorrow morning.

Keeping fingers and toes crossed that everything "comes out okay in the end."
No emergency vet visits, just stinky poo and all better!!

with my luck, i'll have a proficient knowledge of GI ailments by the time i get into vet school, just based on experience with these guys (IF i get in, that is) Well Marco seems to feel better today. I think the vibes helped. He still had some diarrhea today but there was no more blood, so i'm relieved. Well... more like the very beginning of the first poo of the day had a little blood colour but it didn't show up anymore after that, so i think it was just left over from before. /details But anyway Marco is alert and ate breakfast and dinner with no problem. no more shivering and uncomfortable positions. fingers crossed that he's gonna heal up quickly. I'm gonna leave him home tomorrow. No sense in taking him to work and stressing him out right now.
