I love to read and I thought now would be a good time for me to check out some good books on dog nutrition so I was wondering does anyone have any suggestions on some good ones to read?

Dr. Lonsdale's book "Raw Meaty Bones" would be a good place to start, even if you are not particularly interested in feeding a "prey model style" raw diet. This book is far more important in regards to Dr. Pitcairn standing up and blowing the whistle on the connection between (most) veterinarians and the commercial pet food industry. "Performance Dog Nutrition: Optimize Performance With Nutrition" by Jocelynn Jacobs - the content is good and should be applied to every dog, not just performance dogs, but the book is full of grammatical errors and misspellings, so it was really difficult and annoying for me to read. Monica Segal's two books Canine Kitchen and Optimal Nutrition are also nice. " Canine - Feline Nutrition" is biased towards the pet food industry and written by authors who are either employees of the IAMS company or endorsing its products, so some of the content must be taken with a grain (or rather a rock ) of salt, but the part on how the digestive system works and the role of different nutrients is right on. The very best, most detailed resource is the 2006 NRC publication "Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats" though, but it is expensive and not something you'd really read from cover to cover. If you shop around, you might be able to get a copy for around $250.

Thank you, Mordanna. I am a bit disappointed that Barnes and Noble doesn't seem to have some of those books. I do have a gift card for there so I was hoping to use that. I will check some of the online retailers for some of them. I keep saying no more books but here I go again! Most of the time I check books out from the library since I managed to cut my book collection in half a couple years ago.

Is the Dr. Pitcairn book worth buying too? I have a copy from the 90's but there's newer one out with good reviews on Amazon.

Suzanne Yes, definitely worth reading, even though I do not share all his views, e.g. such as feeding dogs and cats vegetarian diets. If you buy, make sure you get the newest edition though (2005).

I found out my local library has Dr. Lonsdale's book, Raw Meaty Bones so I am going to start with that one. I am a bit disappointed that they don't have any of the other ones. Thank you again, Mordanna.

Strombeck's book on Home-Prepared Diets, for me, was one of the best investments. The diets are crap though But there is all sorts of nutritional information in there, and information about nutrition and different diseases, and how you can almost guarantee your dog will have allergies if you wean them onto regular too soon, etc. I found it to be a wealth of information. I think it was connie that recommended Paul Pitchford's Healing with Whole Foods, though I've never been able to put it to good use because my dogs are sensitive to just about everything. Belfield sells a book on his website about how different vitamins and minerals can affect the health of a dog and different disease processes, How to have a Healthier Dog. And if you have a dog with intestinal overgrowth, lots of allergies, leaky gut, grain intolerance, and particularly if you are thinking of homecooking, Elaine Gottschall's book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Intestinal Health Through Diet, has a really great description of how intestinal health is compromised and the types of foods that will help it heal.
