A five month old pup, daughter of "Maia" who was one of the two "LGDs in NC" we rescued, needs a home. Maia had a litter sired by the Pyrenees male she was working with, and this pup is from that litter.

My Lu is this cross, and so was Don McCaig's "Rose" (my Lu is her littermate, in fact), about whom he told several stories on NPR. It's a nice cross, the more laid back personality of the Pyr with the lighter grooming needs of the Maremma.

This puppy has been raised as a pet, but it is just possible that with patience and the right setup she might be acclimated still to guarding livestock - she's only been a pet for two and a half months. Maia's guarding instincts are extremely strong and correct, and the sire was a very good Pyrenees - much more stock oriented than territorial or human oriented.

On the other hand, she'll make a fine companion for someone looking for a giant fuzzy wuzzy to add to their home life. And more hair. Lots more hair. However, one of the advantages of the Maremma genetics is it almost always lightens up the coat - much less grooming required. She will also make an excellent all-around farm guardian, if allowed to bond further with a human family. Even if not kept as a formal livestock guardian, she will most likely "adopt" any livestock available to her on a small farm and minimally warn off intruders and alert the family to things that are amiss. She's accustomed to horses, cats, poultry, and other dogs.

She is in a somewhat desperate situation - her family is moving and can't take a dog her size with them (sigh). And of course they waited to mention it until the very last minute. At this point they are talking about giving her to someone who is interested in adding her to their commercial breeding operation (she looks like a purebred Maremma, yay). The couple who rescued her mother and aunt found out and are trying to find an alternative ASAP.

My Lu, who is half Pyr and half Maremma, but this pup doesn't have any markings on her ears like Lu does. The coat will be similar (not as thick if kept inside).
